How do you keep your aquarium secure so the cat can not get to the fish?

we have a lid on it. TBH it's the fish food he goes for

DramaAlpaca · 29/11/2014 18:22

Same as derek. The cat likes sitting on the lid looking at the fish, but he can't get at them. He's more interested in the fish food. He also likes sitting on the lid because it's warm from the lights underneath.

does your lid have a flap that opens for feeding? mine does and the cat can open it and I am worried she will put her paw in and injure the fish. I tried sticky tape over it but she can get that off.

My cat also likes the fish food.

You clearly have a clever cat! It wouldn't occur to mine to do that. The fish would be fair game if the lid was open, but he's too dim to try opening it himself.

Could you put something on the top of the tank to hold the lid down, maybe?

My mum has had both cats and fish for years. Cat never bothered about the fish.

BertieBotts · 29/11/2014 18:54

Are they big fish?

dancestomyowntune · 29/11/2014 18:57

Our cat isn't bothered about the fish. It's too lazy to attempt any sort of attack!

We have ginger tom cat and a fish. Cat destroyed lid of the fish tank to get at the.... Water!?!?!

We had to dispose of lid, cat now happily drinks the fish food, fish enjoys coming for a look and they never try to eat each other (yet)

I was holding the flap down with three heavy books but cat now managing to move heavy books one by one. I need to find something cat proof to put on the lid.

I think the lid could end up getting broken by her and I really don't want that.

Thank you for your replies Smile

My cat is far too lazy to be bothered by the fish. Children on the other hand.... something like this should do the job?

DramaAlpaca · 29/11/2014 21:08

We looked after our neighbour's goldfish one year while she was on holiday. We put the tank, which didn't have a lid, high up on a chest of drawers in DS's bedroom. One day I found the poor goldfish on the ground, sadly dead, and a cat with a soggy paw sitting beside the tank Sad. I had some explaining to do to my neighbour...

Your cat is a determined creature!

drama that's so sad. I really don't want that to happen to my fish.
