Excuse the bad photos and terrible water quality but I acquired these guys this evening, what are they? Mollies?

Platys i THINK! Pregnant?

Madratlady · 08/08/2014 21:06

That was my other guess. The previous owner said both male. We shall see.

Platys.

CatKisser · 08/08/2014 21:11

With platys, look at their underside. Males have this, er, longer bit coming out of their bottom fin that the females don't have.

Madratlady · 08/08/2014 21:14

OK will investigate

What, male and female? Oh dear.... (Fond memories of trying to fish out thousands of platt fry before giving up and letting them get eaten)

Madratlady · 08/08/2014 22:03

I don't want hundreds of platies! I didn't really want any.

CatKisser · 08/08/2014 22:07

Damn.
Do you know anyone who has a tropical tank who could take them for you? Could you advertise on FB selling page or something? Platys aren't exactly sought after so maybe not.... Hope you find something!

Madratlady · 08/08/2014 22:17

They can stay. I bought a second hand small tank and ended up with these guys as well. The tank water and filter were disgusting. They are spending a week or 2 in the tank they came in (now cleaned) to male sure they aren't carrying anything nasty then moving into my big tank. We're cycling a 240l tank at the moment.

It's OK, now they are in clean water I got a better look and they are both male.

Oh no, did someone pull the 'if you don't take them then I'm flushing them' trick on you? I've heard this happen with buying a second hand tank. I've always been very lucky with my bargains though. Good thing you've got two males!

Madratlady · 08/08/2014 23:29

No, I knew she wanted the fish to go with the tank which was a total bargain and I felt sorry for them swimming in the manky water. So cheap tank = happy Madratlady, clean water and eventually a big community tank = happy platys. They are quite nice.

Dh says they are cute and we should get them some friends. I may end up with a shoal.
