Temperate or tropical?

So I have a new tank! It's 90L and came with a heater.

I have three Danios to transfer but the lady in the fish shop said Danios can be temperate or tropical. Is this right?

If so which would be easier for when I add to the tank? She said tropical are easier in her opinion but I am not sure

Yay for a new tank! I would say zebra danios are temperate, because in a heated house they won't need a heater- temperate would be about 18-22C and tropical is more like 24-26C. Some people do keep them in heated tanks but they prefer things a bit cooler than some other tropical fish. The only difference between temperate and tropical is the temperature, so one is not easier than the other- it just depends what sort of fish you have.

If you do keep them in an unheated tank then there are quite a few species you can go for that will thrive in a cooler tank but are sold as 'tropical' fish.

A temperate tank would be better for your leccy bill too Grin

Thanks that's great.
Think I prefer no heater. I am just setting it up now. Had a bit of a faff with the small tank trying to get the gravel hoovered of poo. It's pretty murky now. But I have put some water treatment in and am waiting to see if it settles.

Thank you for all your advice. Sure I will be back!

My mum keeps danios in a cold water set up with platies and a few other fish, there's quote a wide selection of cold water fish now ( not just gold fish ), you can get some nice loaches that don't grow very big and you can get cold water shrimp.

Thanks I will have a look into those. We have gone for temperate.
I am looking forward to the Danios going in. It will be like a palace compared to what they are in now

They will love the bigger tank, danios are quite fast swimmers so need room to swim. My mum has my old 100ltr tank and has done a great job with stocking it with temperate fish, she has quite a few in there ( probably too many ) but they seem to poop less than my guppies and plecs in my tropical tank, I end up having to clean the bottom of mine twice a week.

A temperate tank would be at the lower end of the temperature scale for a platy, so it would depend how cool it got overnight in winter. But there are loads to choose from, have a look at this article. I think the Odessa barbs are one of my favourites, they are beautiful.
