Goldfish needs a new home :(

Hi, last year I bought my son a couple of goldfish. I was given rubbish advice by the pet shop guy and ended up with one of them dying within a month (tiny tank for 2 goldfish). After that I spent ages online trying to learn as much as I could and have managed to keep the other goldfish (his name is Flea) alive. He has now grown loads and I ended up getting him a newer larger tank when he outgrew the other one. I cannot afford to get him a larger tank now, which is something he needs again as he's reached about 6 inches and is currently in a 54L tank. I'm trying to find someone that is willing to rehome him and provide something better for him, I'm hoping for a pond. He's quite lovable and blows bubbles on the surface of the water to make a noise when I walk into the room (he begs for food). I've contemplated taking him to the local botanic garden but the pond there doesn't look that good. Any help would be appreciated, advice or otherwise.

Whereabouts do you live? Area would help if you don't want to be too specific. I have a pond and I am sure there are many others here and possibly could help.

Does your local council have a fish pond on any of their property- parks, gardens etc? That might be worth a go, try giving them a ring. There are loads of local aquatic groups on Facebook, I'm sure you'd be able to find someone on there with space in their pond. It's a good time of year to move fish.

It's illegal to just release them without permission though and people have been prosecuted, so make sure it's all legit.

I'm glad you're rehoming him and not flushing him like some people would :)

Sorry, too far, but I second trying facebook. Loads of aquatic groups there and I'm sure there will be someone local to you with a pond.

Do you have a Dobbies garden centre in your area? The guy in the one near me, where I bought my fish, told me they take fish to rehome. Usually one of the staff ( experienced fish keeper) will rehome the fish.

Yes, a lot of aquatic centres can help rehome fish. You won't get any control over where he goes though. Aquatic stores can vary wildly so there's no guarantee that he'll end up in a suitable home.
