Fishnet

If you have a fish pond, fish tank or are seeking advice about keeping tropical fish, you can find advice on our Fish forum.

Tank is finally settling down (I think), how long before I add more fish?

After the high spike in nitrites the tank water is almost perfect ( still a tiny trace of nitrite but barely anything ), my male dwarf gourami seems happy, out of all the fish he seems happiest.

I have been doing daily water changes ( up until 4 days ago when nitrite went right don to 0 but today it's showing a trace ) and have used quick start ( as advised on another forum) to kick start the filter a little.

How long until I can add some fish and how many should I add? I have some Corys on order ( ordered them before my nitrite spiked ), was meant to call the shop today but I havn't, I would rather wait a little while before getting them.

I'd still give it another week at least- didn't you have a death recently?

I lost 2 guppies when the water readings went all over the place, and lost the gourami 24 hours after I bought it . Havn't lost anything for over a week though ( I think I'm always loosing guppies due to my high ph, won't be replacing them when they are gone ).

What's your pH now? If you've had that many deaths then I would wait a couple of weeks to see how all the other fish are.

Ph is 7.5

One of the guppies was poorly before I switched tanks so I think the move killed him Sad, guppies are so delicate that it doesn't take much to kill them (because they are so inbread now, most of the shops here are not stocking them anymore for this reason (they are stocking endlers instead), since I have been keeping them (almost 3 years) I have always had deaths every week or so Sad (never had a problem with any other fish), I think my guppy days are over (just wish someone would take my fry).

I'm going to look at fish that like a higher PH (maybe some tetras and the gourami seem to be ok).
