Hi all,
Having finally moved house and parted with my beloved 300L tank, I am thinking about starting again. Obviously, first priority is getting a nice big tank (four foot like the last one, I'm hoping). And I've decided I would really love to keep either a single or a pair of Jack Dempseys - they look gorgeous!

Does anyone here have any experience of keeping these fish? If I were to only have one, would it thrive or not?

I'm getting ahead of myself here, I know - where can I get a bargain giant tank?? :)

They are beautiful fish, moody buggers though My mate used to have one. A single male should be fine on his own and 300L is big enough.

Might be tough to get a tank that big on freecycle! Ebay's probably your best bet (or Gumtree, Pre-Loved etc) or try the local paper.

Annoyingly, a bloke on gumtree about 20 miles from me was GIVING AWAY a 4 foot setup... he's not replied to my text though so I think it must have gone. Gutted ain't the word. I will scour the internet every day, I know there are bargains to be found! :)

I got a Rio 400 (450 litres) for 99 pence on ebay the other day and it's perfect There are definitely bargains to be found.

Have seen Jack Dempsey's and they look fab. And once they breed you can sell all the babies and make lots of money.

You are JOKING?! I'm surprised the seller didn't pull the sale once they realised they'd get bugger all for it. I am insanely jealous :-D

What are you going to keep in it?

I couldn't believe it. He described it as in bad condition, but I took my chances and bid as it was only a ten minute drive away. Was expecting to chuck it straight on the tip. But when I saw it I couldn't believe in what great condition it was. No scratches, fully watertight, trim in great condition. I think the seller didn't really care, he had a 'sold' sign in front of his house, lives in a posh area so probably couldn't care less about the money. Don't know, but it's mine now.

It's going to be my malawi tank. I have the Juwel Vision 260 for them currently, but this is a great upgrade. Just waiting for the bespoke cabinet to be built by a family member (who obviously is a carpenter) as I want a 3fter in the cabinet for fry.

Sorry, rambling now. But yeah, so excited about my buy. And I wasn't even looking, so you never know when the next deal is around the corner.

I'm torturing myself really as I certainly can;t afford any new purchases until next month, so if anything does pop up I won't be able to buy it anyway! Unless I can find a bargain like yours. I also have bear in mind what I can cram into my poor little punto, so although I'm looking for a 4footer, it will have to be a relatively short one, iyswim.

I couldn't afford it and I was just looking to see what the going rate for those tanks was. I didn't intend to buy one until October after having had my first paycheck from my new job. I came across it, put it in my watch list and lo behold, nobody bid on it, so it was mine :) Maybe this is actually the best time, quite a few people will be on holiday or too busy so less bidding wars.

Oh no about the car. There are services available though, someone could transport it for you for a small cost.
