Dd1 wants to breed guppies, at the moment we have 6 males and not enough room for anymore so i'm guessing we would need another tank, plus another for fry?

If i give in and let her do it will we end up with millions of guppies that we wont be able to home or will pet shops take them?

Is it a bad idea?

What size tank would we need for the fry (could they go in a smallish tank in dd's room)?

Yes, you will end up with millions of guppies. I would check with your local fish shop first that they will take them (be aware that they may just use them to feed to other fish).

There are some egg laying fish that are easy to breed if you want a breeding project that's a bit less productive.

Otherwise you will need a spare tank or five (and filters and heaters) and a breeding trap for the female. How small is the smallish tank? You'd need a 10 gallon at least.

Maybe i will try and put her off Grin, i might wait until we can get a bigger tank and then try and breaad the bristle nose pleco instead (they are much cuter).

You'd need loads of females to keep up the 1:3 minimum ratio, some say 1:4 so you would be looking at 18-24 females.

Maybe you can have a ram pair in a big enough tank? German blue rams or Bolivian rams are beautiful. They will lay their eggs, guard them and voila you will have babies Grin

Thank you Mama Pizza, i will have a look at rams.
