Picked up a small tank today at the tip but dh is saying i can't keep it Sad, i need to clean it up and check it over, i think its 30 or 40ltr.

If i get to keep it, what could i keep in it?

Woohoo for new tank! It's on the small side for fish but you could keep a few shrimp in there if it's 40 litres.

Where on earth is that tip? I went to mine last weekend and asked and he looked at me like I was an alien. I also want a bargain tank!

Maybe a betta?

FermezLaBouche · 17/04/2012 17:17

Ooooh yes - a male Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) would be gorgeous. They are aggressive towards other males, so keeping him on his own would be ok. And they come in really stunning colours.

Mine's called Chang and is royal blue with long flowing tails. (Saddo emoticon)

My betta is turquoise, pink and purple (sooo manly ;)) and he is called Sir Barry Pose-a-lot Grin

Marne · 17/04/2012 17:32

It cost me £3 Grin, i have seen quite a few at the tip but this is the first one i have found that has a lid, also picked up a 4 man tent for £2 (havn't checked its all there yet though). The tanks still in the boot of my car, dh is still saying i cant keep it Sad, TBH i don't know where i would put it but would love to put a male Betta in it. Will clean it up tomorrow and see if i can fit it in anywhere, if not dh will force me to e-bay it Sad.

Seriously, I went to my tip and they had no clue what I was talking about. But am constantly looking on ebay and gumtree, one day there will be THE bargain. Although, my 120l one only cost me a tenner on ebay and it is already set up, looks fab.

Bettas are definitely great. You don't even have to keep them on their own, have a look at this. Mine lives with eight harlequins and all seem happy.

Marne · 17/04/2012 18:14

They are lovely, i keep eying them up in the shop, dd1 wants a blue one Grin, just need to convince dh. My other tank is now fully stocked and i want more fish Grin, its quite adictive.

I am sure you can convince your DH, it's just a small tank and bettas are really fun to watch. Mine loves lounging on top of his big plant, so cute.

It is very addictive! I can't believe that in a fraction of a few months I have gone from one small tank to four. And I am now thinking about five and six. DS has lost quite a few toys along the way to make room, but he hasn't noticed yet and he loves watching the fish. He even knows them all by name.

Dh made me put it on e-bay Sad but i have started it at a high price so it probably wont sale, i have my eye on a betta Grin.

Boo to your DH. Although, if you sold it for the high price you could get two small tanks or one big tank instead ;)

Marne · 20/04/2012 19:20

I don't think its going to sell, the corrners are a bit chipped Sad, it doesn't seem to leek though so i might have to keep it.

Do you mind sharing a link because I am nosey? Well, looks like you HAVE to get a betta :) Or how about a couple of dwarf puffers?

Marne · 20/04/2012 19:42

here ,it was probably at the tip for a reason (the corrners being chipped) Sad

A betta would be great for a tank that size. As someone has mentioned you can sometimes keep other fish in with a Betta (not another Betta though), although it can be a bit hit and miss with what tank mates to get.

I tried BN's, Harlequins and Cherry Barbs with my betta at various times and none were successful so he ended up on his own in a 100litre tank.

Seemed happy enough though :)

MamaPizza · 21/04/2012 11:42

The chip is just cosmetic, if nobody buys it and you can hopefully keep it just take some black tape and take it once around the tank to cover the chip. As long as it is watertight it is fine.

My betta lives happily with the harlequins, but make sure you add the small fish first, then the betta. Otherwise he could claim his territory and scare them away / eat them.

Just checked the link again, please don't sell Grin
