PLEASE tell me Ich isn't always fatal?!

DAMN DAMN DAMN! One of my beloved Weather loaches has little salt-like spots on him and I'm sure it's Ich. trouble is, even when I've treated other tanks with White-Spot treatment, the infected fish has usually died anyway!
I have treated the tank and taken the stuff out of the filter - is there ANYTHING else I can do? I would be honestly devastated to lose my Dojo....
Any advice gratefully received!
Oh and the treatment I've used is "LoveFish" - is that ok?!

Sorry - also read that raising the temp of the aquarium for a couple of weeks will speed up the life cycle of the ich parasite....
now, the tank does have a heater, as it used to be tropical, but I keep it off as it's a coldwater tank and I have gold fish in it. Surely I can't turn the heater on with goldfish in there?

A lot of ich strains are med resistant so if you don't have any luck with the LoveFish (not one I'm familiar with) then you could try one of the other brands. The WaterLife one is pretty well regarded. Increasing the temperature is one way of speeding up the life cycle but you'd need to raise it really high (like 29-30C) so I wouldn't recommend it for coldwater fish.

I'm a bit embarrassed about the "taken the stuff out of the filter" thing as I think I've done it wrong. The leaflet in the treatment said to take the carbon out the filter - I assumed this was the beady/stone bits in the centre of the sponge...kind of plugged in by another bit of sponge? I'm not explaining well, sorry. It was just a kind of panic reaction...
I will have a read of the article. Just so annoyed as well as this tank has been problem-free ever since I set it up - but due to work being particularly knackering at the mo I haven't changed me water as frequently as I ought to have. Feeling very guilty :(

You do need to take carbon out when using meds but not every filter has carbon in (it's not essential and it's expensive so I don't bother!). Activated carbon is either in sponge or granule form and it's black so hard to miss. Anything else should be left in the filter because it will be full of good bacteria. A dip in water quality at this time would make things worse for your fish.

Don't feel guilty- keeping fish is bloody complicated despite popular opinion that they are cheap and easy pets. It's tough to get accurate advice and information too since most of the 'information' comes from people that are going to make money out of you. Some of them are genuine but some aren't and it's hard to tell the difference.
