Please help someone, before I go mad....

Have a new fishtank, with 2 little goldfish.

There is a filter, which works, I don't overfeed the fish, and none of them are dead.

So why does it stink so much? Seriously, I can smell it as I walk in the front door.

The water is not cloudy, in fact, the fish have been in there for only 4 days, so how on earth can it smell so bad?

Help, please.....

Does it smell a bit like dirty nappies? Sounds like the ammonia level might have gone up. This happens in new tanks if they have not been set up for long enough prior to adding fish- it takes around 6 weeks but most shops don't bother to tell you that. You really need a water test kit to confirm this but I would do a fairly large water change (about 50%) for now just in case.

Have a read of this, it will explain what I mean.

How big is the tank exactly? Goldfish are pretty hefty fish when they grow up. Sit down before you read this!

Thanks for those links.

Smells like rotting vegetables. Will do a water change and possibly get a testing kit.

Hope my fish will last long enough to grow! I had no idea they got that big.
