OP posts:
eefs · 05/08/2005 09:56

not sure if Kiera Knightly is woman enough to play Elizabeth Bennett though - she's not exactly the heaving bosom type is she?
Hope it's a good movie.

GeorginaA · 05/08/2005 18:21

NO-ONE can replace Colin Firth!

NomDePlume · 05/08/2005 18:22

I agree with all here, especially eefs 'heaving bosom' comment, I though Jennifer Ehle was perfect for the part.

GeorginaA · 05/08/2005 18:22

And Mr Collins doesn't look geeky enough...

GeorginaA · 05/08/2005 18:23

And it doesn't seem to have the subtle ironic humour that the BBC production had...

(oh god, I'm going to have to watch Pride and Prej DVD again tonight now, aren't I?!)

franke · 05/08/2005 18:25

I don't like Keira Knightley. I think it's her mouth that annoys me.

franke · 05/08/2005 18:26

Agree GA - the subtle ironic humour of the BBC one was because they used huge chunks of the original text.

Hulababy · 05/08/2005 18:34

Hmmm...I enjoyed the BBC version so much, I am not sure if a movie will stand up against it.

And Mr Darcy has to be Colin Firth now, surely?

GeorginaA · 05/08/2005 18:35

It wasn't just the original text though to be fair... all the characters in the Beeb version had fabulous timing and very subtle expressions - just a raised eyebrow from Jennifer or a look from Mr Bennett (forget the actor's name) would have me laughing out loud. It's just such a fab production - anything else is just an insult to the memory of Mr Darcy

Hulababy · 05/08/2005 18:37

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Mr Darcy has to be Colin Firth - oh, Mr Darcy!

GeorginaA · 05/08/2005 18:38

THAT'S it ... now where did I put the damn DVDs

Hulababy · 05/08/2005 18:39

My friend has mine - must see if she has watched them yet.

franke · 05/08/2005 18:40

Wasn't he voted the greatest actor of the century in one of those daft Millenium reviews at the end of 1999? (And weren't the Beatles the grestest composers of the Millenium ?)

CarolinaMoon · 05/08/2005 18:40

am I the only one here who thinks Colin Firth wasn't actually a very good Mr Darcy (lovely though he is...)?

CarolinaMoon · 05/08/2005 18:45

in fact, judging by that trailer, spooks bloke looks like a faaab Mr Darcy! He was lush in spooks.

Nightynight · 05/08/2005 18:45

I didnt think he looked that good (I never saw it), but have just watched the trailer, and dont like the look of the Darcy in this film. looks more like a football hooligan. Elizabeth Bennet looks good though.

tortoiseshell · 05/08/2005 18:47

Oh really really don't like the trailer - partly the american voice over, partly the 'updated' language - just LOVED the BBC version, especially CF, but Jennifer Ehle was fab too.

Here is a little known fact about BBC PaP - a friend of mine was in it! I didn't know until I got the DVD for Christmas, and spotted him being a butler.

GeorginaA · 05/08/2005 18:48

Trailer looked crap, tbh But then I'm spoiled forever by the original...

GeorginaA · 05/08/2005 18:48

Ooo how exciting, tortoiseshell!

yingers74 · 05/08/2005 19:01

Nothing will replace the bbc version which was great, great, great. But I will watch this version, i love the book so much that it will be nice to see a different take on it.

bran · 05/08/2005 19:30

Does anyone else think Kiera Knightly looks just like Winona Ryder in that trailer?

I'd love to see the film, but I hate to think of the bribe I'm going to have to offer dh to get him into the cinema for it. Perhaps I might organise a mum's night out with my friends instead.

Lonelymum · 05/08/2005 19:33

Sorry, can't be bothered to download the trailer. But had to express my disgust at the tag line "Sometimes the last person you want to be with is the one person you should be with..." or whatever it was! How naff is that?

Nik72 · 05/08/2005 20:00

Wasn't Jennifer Ehle pg during filming, explaining the enormous heaving bosom?

Agree, no offence to Keira Knightly, that I don't think she quite fits the part but we'll see!

gingernut · 05/08/2005 20:04

I thought it was the actress who played Jane (Susannah Harker?) who was pg during filming of the 1995 BBC series.

Incidentally, does anyone remember the BBC series before that one, with Elizabeth Garvie (?) as Elizabeth and David Rintoul as Darcy?

I'm not convinced about this one from the trailer but will probably want to see it even so. Fancy a bit of Colin Firth tonight now though....
