Afternoon all...

I home ed. and my two eldest (12 and 10) want to know more about the history of cinema. Ideally I'd like to show them 10-15 'must sees' suitable for children (up to a 12 rating I guess) covering everything from silent movies to CGI
I have a few ideas but don't know enough to pick the best, which Chaplin?, which Ghibli? and is there anything gorgeous, arty and european that would fit the bill?

Metropolis by Fritz lang is great
Vertigo or North by Northwest both very good the later more funny and better suited to kids I think
citizen Kane is a classic but The Magnificent Ambersons might be better for kids
The Women is great or just about anything with Barbara Stanwyck in it/by George Cukor
Ghostbusters
Wizard of Oz
ET
It's a wonderful life
Spirited Away
Though check ratings for these as can't remember....
Look at the BFI website or find some top 100 lists for more ideas
Have fun

Thank you, loads of good ideas. Tempted to forget the kids and just watch DVD's with a bottle of wine!
