Boat That Rocked is a pile of pants - discuss

Sorry. I know that is harsh. But honestly, Richard Curtis...

I LOVED all the Blackadders and still laugh madly when I watch reruns on UK Gold, even though I know what's coming. 4W + 1 Funeral was funny, Notting HIll and Love Actually were going downhill and The Boat That Flopped is just such a disappointment.

Great cast, great fashion, great music - but these do not, on their own, a good film make. How about a decent script, or a coherent plot that doesn't nick its main subplot off Mamma Mia, or, ideally, both?

How about having a cast off 5 rather than 15 and being able to concentrate on properly fleshing out those characters?

How about not obsessing about the bromance rituals of middle-ageing blokes (pubs, stag nights, silly dances etc etc etc ad nauseum) and not short-changing women (over 50% of the population, Rich) by portraying the female sex as 100% man-chasing bimbos? (was the 'token' lesbian thrown in to try and make things okay? If so, it didn't work.)

Phew, I feel better now. But is anyone with me on this??

I will not be going to see The Boat... as I cringe through most of Curtis's films and I have only read bad reviews so far.

So you haven't made me change my mind

Flibbertyjibbet · 10/04/2009 23:56

I won't be going to see it either. Blackadder I think was his finest hour and all downhill from there.
I thought 4w+1f a bit overrated, Knotting hill very overrated, and this boat that rocks just looks like all the same faces in another overrated, overcomplicatedplotty type film.

It's a perfectly enjoyable film. If there's bugger all else on the TV. Certainly not worth the cost of going to the cinema.

I didn't spot any plot at all. But I did spot a 1968 Hendrix track.

How can someone create Blackadder go on to make Love Actually? It really was vomititis.

The rot set in with Notting Hill.

retiredgoth2 · 11/04/2009 00:33

I quite liked Love Actually.

..it is tosh, yes. Enjoyable tosh though....

....I quite liked that bit!

The subtitles made me laugh.

I must have been very, very drunk when I saw it.

Er, both times.

Anything with Bill Nighy in seems to be terrible.

BitOfFun · 21/04/2009 18:11

Does anyone remember the contestant on dragons den who wanted a million towns a film with a "major star"?

Turns out she was a total amateur with a shit script, and the million was all for Bill Nighy...so that's the price of integrity, apparently!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 21/04/2009 18:18

Do you remember 'The Girl In The Cafe'? That was appalling, but at least it had the excuse of being worthy.
Have not seen The Boat That Rocked but it sounds like there are no excuses for it.
