What happened in The Notebook? Video chewed up the tape!

Was watching The Notebook last night but recorded the last half hour as I was tired. Darn Video chewed up the tape! Can anyone tell me what happened at the end. Want to know who the James Garner character was playing - the fiance or Noah?

It was a good film. He played Noah and obviously the lady was Ali. I don't know how far you got but she didn't marry her fiance and went on to have children and grandchildren with Noah.Although due to dementia she doesn't recognise them or him.

At the end of the story her memory returns for 5 mins and Noah is so happy. Then they fall asleep and die together.
