Wow, I'm glad I didn't waste much time watching this and am only catching it as I slather on Flexitol, because it's even even more dumb ass than I'd imagined.

How fucking hokey can you get?

This takes the cake!

ok, yes it's crap.
But sometimes crap is enjoyable, like a poorly written but exciting crime thriller
With all those Curtis films I tend to watch them more for London as a background, I never really feel for any of the characters.
They are all about Britain/London as I perceive the Americans think of us. [what do you think expat?]

expatinscotland · 14/07/2008 19:07

No, I don't think most Americans perceive Londoners that way, except maybe really provincial ones who haven't travelled much.

But then (dons fire suit), I've always preferred Paris to London and the French version of romance.

Hence, my DVD collection of 'feel good' films are mostly French ones.

. . . whispers, I've never really found many Englishmen attractive and runs away quickly.

No-one's bitten yet, I think you're safe with the Paris>London view for the time being
Remove fire suit
I did think similar, in that if we think these stories are really 'romantic', we probably are going wrong, because they are false rather than real

DarrellRivers · 14/07/2008 19:11

OMG expat

expatinscotland · 14/07/2008 19:12

I admit to owning a copy of 'Amelie'.

I hated Love Actually although I kind of like Notting Hill when I'm feeling miserable because Julia Roberts is good - all the others are shite. Same with Love Actually, actually. Emma Thompson is great, Alan Rickman is okay - all the other story lines are just a bit odd.

E.G. the Martin whathisname from the Office - why a porn film stand in 'running gag' for the whole film which is embarrasing, not funny and simply sets up a very lame line at the end. The school children in love were a bit icky, Martine Macutcheon is rubbish...

I prefer Amelie too

maidamess · 14/07/2008 19:17

I like bits of it.

But can't stand Martine McCutcheon, the old guy playing the 'pop' star, the bloke who's in live with Keira Knightly, Keira Knightly, and the gimp at the end with the 4 blonde strumpets in America.

Apart from that, its great.

LazyLinePainterJane · 14/07/2008 20:08

Oh yes, Darrell, it is awful, yet I have seen it twice. The sort of film you would watch while a bit ill in bed.

beansprout · 14/07/2008 20:11

Lou - what did he say in the letters?

lou33 · 14/07/2008 20:17

they were all phrased slightly differently, but said the same thing, which was he agreed it was thoughtless and the wrong choice of word to use

he said he appreciated me bringing it up and would make more effort not to be so careless in the future

i expected some computer generated fob off, so it was a nice surprise to find him apologising

and it was hand written

beansprout · 14/07/2008 20:18

Fair play.

lou33 · 14/07/2008 20:21

i googled his agent and emailed them asking for my message to be passed on

i think it was about 10 days later i received his letter

beansprout · 14/07/2008 20:24

I completely agree that he should never have used a word like that, but I appreciate him taking the time to reply. And good on you for writing to him in the first place.

expatinscotland · 14/07/2008 20:35

and the film is shite, too.

Did he apologise for that as well?

Thinkstoomuch · 14/07/2008 20:50

Reasons 'tis utter bilge: Keira Never-get-tired-of-punching-her Knightley; Andrew Talent-free Lincoln; the bit where the people in the church start playing instruments - I truly could vomit; embarrassingly thin storylines and characterisations; just the whole sledgehammer sentimentality of it all.

wheresthehamster · 14/07/2008 21:00

The only bits I can stomach are the subtitles for the Portuguese girl and her family. Make me laugh - but obviously not worth watching all the rest of the crap for.
