Going to have some time to watch a film, so please help inspire me.

Have seen "Juno" and "Atonement" recently and loved them both. Not a horror fan - actually, I'm a wimp so even disturbing thrillers are out .

So, come on MN, what shall I take out to watch and why?

Just watched "Deja Vu" - absolutely gripping. Didn't get how he survived, but what the heck, they made a cute couple.

Cris - Thought "The Lives of Others" was brilliant. Hated "Y Tu Mama Tambien" - reminded me of "Amores Perros". Will add the others to the list - thanks. Have you seen "The Secret Life of Words"? - harrowing in parts but another one that takes your breath away.

Thanks again MN, I'm definitely going to be seeing things I wouldn't normally take out - without the recommendation, I wouldn't have chosen today's and it was great entertainment.

Zodiac. It is about a serial killer but not a horror and no gory bits. Based on a true story from the cops angle of trying to catch him.

1066andallthat · 06/07/2008 16:17

Brilliant - ever growing list .

Gosford Park
Enchanted
Run Fatboy Run
Perfect Stranger
La Hora Fria
Charlie Wilson's War
Stardust
40-Yr-Old Virgin
Junebug
Be Kind, Rewind
Hotel Rwanda
After the Wedding
Into the Wild
Bobby
Lantana
Zodiac

Didn't include "Mighty Heart", as when I was cutting and copying, I realised that I've already seen it. Angelina Jolie was excellent.

VS, I really enjoyed it, but felt as if it wasn't really going anywhere. He wans't that "jack blackish" in it, nowhere near School of Rock levels. I loved Mos Def. Very feel good, and I thought it was funny.

VictorianSqualor · 06/07/2008 17:37

spoiler
(deja vu)

1066, it was because he altered the time, as she lived and the bomb didn't go off he wasn't called in to check the case out and never went back in time iyswim.

The Prestige

I saw this on DVD a few months back. Working last night, I caught the second-half of it on Sky Movies (so if you have Sky Movies Drama, it's showing currently).

It is about rival magicians. It is a mystery more than a thriller I think. Best that you don't research it, as it's best not knowing too much... just rent it and watch!

LazyLinePainterJane · 06/07/2008 19:54

ooh i liked that, nick.

Ambi · 06/07/2008 20:36

oh yes nanny, the prestige is brilliant and probably my favourite film I've seen this year.

One film I enjoyed that I didn't think I would was bright young things, its a few years old written by Stephen fry about the rich young partygoers in the 30s.

1066andallthat · 06/07/2008 21:54

Aha, VS, that would explain it .

OK, my trips for dvds will include:
Gosford Park
Enchanted
Run Fatboy Run
Perfect Stranger
La Hora Fria
Charlie Wilson's War
Stardust
40-Yr-Old Virgin
Junebug
Be Kind, Rewind
Hotel Rwanda
After the Wedding
Into the Wild
Bobby
Lantana
Zodiac
Touching the Void
The Prestige
One Day in September
When We Were Kings
Bright Young Things

Like I've already said, thanks, I had a choice today and it was good to see something out of my usual "range" and very liberating to stand with three dvds, thinking, "which one first?"

you'll have to let us know what you think.

1066andallthat · 07/07/2008 20:51

Will do - and will see if "Insider Man" is available, too as Denzil is gorgeous .

300!!! Great, what a film!

Madness? THIS IS SPARTA!!

ScarletA · 08/07/2008 17:43

This is what I've recently watched on Lovefilm

Recommend;
Nowhere in Africa - film about Jewish family who escape to Kenya before WW2. Poignant and moving, about not belonging.
Black Cat, White Cat - fantastic mad film about gipsies in Romania.
I'm not Scared - Italian film about a group of kids who find a kidnapped boy, very atmospheric.
Not so keen;
Not country for Old Men - I know it is apparently a cohen bros classic but enough horrible violence for no reason already.
Brick Lane - Ok but very forgetable

Just watching first series of six feet under as I missed it first time around - loving it.

barking · 08/07/2008 17:50

I second six feet under - absolutely the best!
Into the Wild also fab

1066andallthat · 08/07/2008 22:06

Seen all five series of "Six feet under" - anything of a similar ilk (been out of the UK for four years now)?

Can anyone tell more about "Not country for Old Men"? Don't do violence per se but was quite pleasantly taken with "Casino Royale" so it might be worth a go.

Just watched "Enchanted" with the DSs - it went down incredibly well, as in I was surprised how much they enjoyed it. Their usual fare is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Scooby Doo .

Off to extend the list - thank you.

Watched "The Prestige" last night. I thought the storyline was great and just loved the ending. It was brilliant - a big thank you.

Thanks everyone, I've just added several to my DVD rental list based on these recommendations.

My recommendations:
Babel
The Science of Sleep (quite quirky, I think it's one that you're either going to love or hate. Imaginative, funny and uplifting.)

1066andallthat · 12/07/2008 10:48

Yes, I liked "Babel", too, so will add the other. As you enjoyed "Babel" - have you seen "Crash"?

1066andallthat - Just seen your message, I guess the only thing that comes to mind of the same quality as 6 feet under but completely different is 'spooks', just watched the whole 6 series - fab!

1066andallthat · 12/07/2008 13:43

Oooh - off to look at Amazon - thanks, Barking.
