Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

Has anyone seen this yet? I saw it yesterday.

A curate's egg: so very good in parts, but rather long on exposition in the early stages. Very knowing in its filming, with sets that looked, er, exactly like sets of mid-20th C - painted flats. Very meta, with nods to "Sunset Boulevard", one so overt I found it patronising to the audience and the wide-eyed heroine who's a bloody filmmaker.

The bad 'un, Little Death - not a spoiler as it pops up within seconds of the film's opening reminded me, though much much later, i.e. about ten minutes ago, of the Blitz Men from "Do Not Adjust Your Set", who I found very disturbing at the time (late 60s).

Gillian Anderson is wonderful, as is the outstanding sound track.

I absolutely loved it. I’m not a horror person but it wasn’t horror really - it was camp, “meta”, silly, sexy… I went to a lesbian screening and there were whoops of joy at points.

Absolutely loved it! Love the whole cast though, seen them in all sorts of things and thought it was campy and funny and sexy and really interesting.

Not ignorant at all - won’t be advertised anywhere because we’re fed up of blokes turning up at our events so shared via WhatsApp etc.

My brother was furious about this film and called me to rant. He said the expressions of female sexuality felt very “off” (something about one character fantasising about being chased in a horror film running in her nightie and her boobs bouncing?) and he looked up the “female” director, he’s actually
a trans identified man. He said if he had made the film, he’d have been called a grubby pervert but if a TIM does it, it’s the most stunning film ever. He gets it.

Your brother is probably right

Your brother’s view of female sexuality is obviously his own and he is entitled to rant about it as much as he likes. I didn’t get that feeling from the film, I really enjoyed it, didn’t feel it was ‘perverted’, but then I probably like very different films to your brother.

I am sure your brother is an accomplished director and if he wants to make a film like this (though not sure why as he didn’t seem to enjoy it), then I would suggest for him to give it a go. I am sure a lot of people would like to see his expressions of female sexuality.

Your brother can do one! As both lesbian A D a woman I thought it was fucking fantastic and as for whether a man could have made that film - I agree that no he couldn’t the fact it was written and directed and starred so many queer women is what makes it a great queer woman film.
Also went to a LGB+ viewing and the audience - mainly lesbians- loved it!

Well he has, because he thought it was ‘off’ and ranted about it, so he must have some opinion on it.

Women aren’t a homogeneous group, especially when it comes to sexuality. My sexuality is probably very different to yours, I have no more insight into yours than you do mine, or I do your brother’s.

Can we only create art about exactly our own experiences? That sounds very uncreative to me. Many authors have written successfully about things they haven’t specifically lived through. There’s a female writer who has created a very successful series of books about a teenage boy for instance.
