Home alone tonight, what to watch?

I have the house to myself, I hardly ever watch films and have no clue what to watch. We have Disney plus. Will buy something cheap off Amazon or I player.

I like a cheesy film, enjoyed catching up on 80s kids films (got to love the goonies) at Christmas and went heavy on early Tom Hanks comedies. When DH is home it tends to be more action films and he loves a war/spy film.

I am more of a Dirty Dancing, the Bodyguard type of uniformed film watcher. Also LOVE a period drama, usually series more than film as you get more details with longer run time, but could happily watch a film adaptation of anything other than the Kira Knightly Pride and Prejudice as she is not my Lizzy.

The last thing I saw and enjoyed at the cinema was Wonka.

Any low brow enjoyable suggestions for me.

Moonstruck
BBC Pride & Prejudice series
Atonement
The Breakfast Club
LA Confidential

Last weekend I watched Shutter Island, which doesn't meet your suggested themes, but I really enjoyed it. Highly recommend.

I recently rewatched Catch Me If You Can and very much enjoyed it. 😁

Thanks @highlandharpy Atonement is a good shout, I read that this year and forgot about the film.

P&P is my absolute favorite too long for one night though (and I know it off by heart having watching it a zillion times).

LA Confidential can also go on my list (then I will see which I can get for free as I am stingy and can then spend the film money on crisps and baileys)

@Lavender1974 I also watched Catch Me If You Can over Christmas, and was tempted to go with Splash tonight!

But feel maybe I should try something a little more recent. I have not kept up with any film releases in the last decade since my children took away ALL my free evening time.

Mystic Pizza!

PurplGirl · 16/01/2026 16:09

If you have Netflix: Have you watched Bridgerton? If not, defo that! Emily in Paris also fun.
Uptown Girls is a good noughties romcom.
You can sign up for a month, well worth it if you’re going to buy/rent something anyway x

The Help on Disney+ is my favourite, or Hidden Figures xx

StarLake666 · 16/01/2026 16:10

Not sure if it meets your brief, but I love The Birdcage - makes me laugh every time and I’ve watched it so often, I’m not sure which channel it’s on but it’s definitely showing atm!
For a very different vibe and a bit of a cult classic, Withnail and I , which I believe is on Film Four.
whatever you do choose, enjoy your evening-sounds like bliss 🥰

I’ve tried to watch this twice now and I just can’t get into it

I’m gutted because I want to love it. I might have to try a third time.

LushLemonTart · 18/01/2026 21:17

Atonement! I cried for days after that.

I enjoyed Purple hearts even though reviews were iffy.

Hoolahoophop · 19/01/2026 09:19

In the end I started my 'lone' evening later than expected and didnt have time for a film afterall. So I took @ZappyDays suggestion and watched the first episode of rivals.

Atonement is definitely on my hit list for when DH goes out next. Just need to push him out the door and a bit earlier.
