Can’t get through The Family Stone

For obvious reasons I’ve seen TFS get mentioned a lot this Christmas, when I took a look I was surprised given the cast I hadn’t watched before so started to watch yesterday…but oh my god it’s awful! I’ve never seen a film with such a bunch of unlikeable characters, I wasn’t invested in any of them so switched it off! I enjoy complex characters, they don’t all have to be heroes…but there was just no one to root for in this film! I don’t understand the film’s appeal at all!

I hated it. My Mum loves it.

It's a marmite film I think.

The opening credits are really lovely, nostalgic and pretty. Then, it turns out rubbish. I think you need to be American to "get" this movie. I lasted about 10 minutes.

ShesTheAlbatross · 21/12/2025 11:14

I watched it for the first time the other day and was so confused!

I knew the ending already and could not work out how they were going to get there in any kind of rational or satisfying way. Turned out they didn’t. They just went “and now this happens”

Notmyreality · 21/12/2025 11:16

it gets a lot better once Claire Danes turns up. She’s the only normal one in the family.

Onefortheroad25 · 21/12/2025 11:17

I watched it with dd17 recently. It’s utter trash. What is it even about? A pretty decent cast but they can’t save this film.

I disagree. She’s useless. She comes to support her sister but after the disaster dinner when Meredith leaves she just sits there, doesn’t go after her even when they hear her crash the car outside. What is the point of this woman!

Rewatched it the other day and enjoyed it even more than the previous three watches, it’s not a film that requires deep thinking. It’s entertaining and relatable, also particularly poignant with regard to the recent death of Diane Keaton (whose performance here is one of her most underrated).

Daytimetellyqueen · 21/12/2025 21:21

I watched it last year & thought it was awful!

Strokethefurrywall · 21/12/2025 21:43

It’s absolutely awful, despite a pretty stellar cast.
I think I liked it when I first watched it years ago, but oh my god they’re all so so awful to Meredith from minute 1, and also there’s no explanation as to why Meredith is such an uptight weirdo!

I just started watching it earlier whilst wrapping gifts but had to switch off. What a shite Xmas movie!

Italiangreyhound · 02/01/2026 01:23

I loved it. Yes, Sarah Jessica Parker's character is so annoying but Claire Danes is lovely. SJP boyfriend is awful but the other guy is nice.

I'm a sucker for a Christmas movie.

Gowlett · 02/01/2026 01:26

It’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen! So much confusion…
The waste of such a stellar cast killed me while watching.

Letmeloveyou · 30/01/2026 21:28

I watched it because SJP was in it and she’s such a weird awkward character! I watch it every christmas! They are all a bit mean to her but she is very uptight and awkward!

TheFatCatSatOnTheMat · 30/01/2026 21:30

I’m utterly bewildered at this film’s success and longevity. Bizarre.

Dexy7655 · 08/02/2026 23:08

Haha I agree its terrible. I did watch it all the way through though, I was drawn in at first but when they started bullying the SJP character I thought maybe there was going to be some interesting character/ plot developments, but instead it all just fell apart really incoherently.

Weird film.
