I thought this was thoroughly enjoyable with two outstanding performances from Josh O'Connor and Glenn Close.

I was a little distracted by the English locations for a film set in New York state.

Enjoyed it a lot - return to form after Glass Onion, which was a bit too gimmicky. Not really a comedy this one, but as ever from Johnson a superb ensemble cast. Josh Brolin truly eating the scenery with delicious horridness.

Josh O'Connor was also excellent - I hadn't seen him in anything before, but I think he has a quiet charisma that deserves a great career.

Thanks @FenceBooksCycle

Whilst we’re doing spoilers….

Why did the embalmer not notice the diamond?

I thought it was a brilliant advert for the modern Catholic Church! Josh O’Connor is superb - he was excellent as Prince Charles in The Crown and he and Zendaya ran away with Challengers which was good enough to get me though a chunk of a 16 hour flight…

I believe devout Catholics don't embalm, which is why the funeral takes place swiftly before any decomposition happens. Something to do with faith in the bodily resurrection at the Last Trumpet. I may be misremembering about that but in any case embalmers don't open them up and remove their innards like the ancient Egyptians did. IIRC from what I remember from Six Feet Under, it's mostly just draining out the blood and pumping in some replacement preservative fluid. I am at the limits of my knowledge here.

I actually thought the opposite - that it really didn't paint the Catholic Church in a good light!

The friend I went with is an evangelical Protestant and she loved what he said about his faith.

I did get distracted by his ears though…

Freudianflip · 14/12/2025 17:49

His accent is a feature of all the films - meant to be funny - tbh toned down in this one!

Freudianflip · 14/12/2025 17:53

Uh, because it was inside the body which at that point was intact?!

Thank you .

I loved it, looking forward to a second viewing.

I enjoyed all 3 of these knives out films.

I found it a bit too long.

Thought Josh O'Connor was really good but by the time BB arrived I was about ready to give up.

Wicks going on about his wanking & Grace being constantly referred to "harlot whore"!

Poor Vera.

No appreciation at all for bringing up Cy.

I thought that Martha had killed Wicks when she heard him talk so disparaging of Cy's mum & of Vera.

I agree with all your comments except the final one 👏

I enjoyed it. I thought that The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was a bit of misdirection so was surprised that the ending was so straightforward. I liked that he cast Andrew Scott in the film, but not as a priest.
Josh O'Connor is very compelling. I loved him in Challengers. I'd say he's a future Oscar winner if the right role comes along.
