Strange film. Did anyone actually like this? Too long, didn't look like New York, and a hugely anticlimactic ending.

Know it's quite an old film by now, but I've only just watched it.

Saw it years ago and found it really strange and boring. Thought with the actors it would be good but no.

Watched it when it first came out and was lauded. Me and ex H decided at the time it was Stanley Kubrik's final wank fantasy as although we could see some jealousy etc in scenes, the rest of it just seemed to be be tits.

I'm sure there was a storyline in there somewhere.

I sort of like it.
Not really keen on Tom and Nicole in it but I liked the idea of a sex club that was actually much darker ( and that it’s not really explained why).

Cruise flashing his medical ID to get info, like it was a police badge, was absurd.

It would have been better if they had a more ambiguous ending, instead of just the older doctor saying, "there are no murders; it's all a misunderstanding".

I did like the line about finding the end of the rainbow, or whatever it was.

I wonder why Kubrick didn’t just make a straight-up film of the novella, for me it would have been more interesting had it been set in the period in which it was written. To me, Kubrick (I love him but he’s not perfect) struggled with depicting contemporary society (not so much in The Shining, no, but it’s set in a world of its own for the most part). Doesn’t help that Cruise is about as compelling as a pan-loaf. I’ve seen it three times, first time in the cinema I was bored, second time the music spooked me, third time wholly unspooked and aggravated by Nicole Kidman’s expressions and acting. I liked the odd NYC set, to me it amplified the dreamlike atmosphere. Agree about the tedious tit-count. I mean, breasts are great and all, but law of diminishing returns😂 Also the sex in the orgy made me lol - has any man on the job ever done that slo-mo horsey move with his shoulders? It totally pulled focus and was so overtly stylised it just wrecked the scene. Perhaps I was looking too closely at the extras lol. Also Nicole’s dreams were like an R-rated perfume ad. How did a film about sex manage to be so unerotic??

Favourite parts were the lighting, the score, and the costume shop, LeeLee Sobieski and the actor playing her father stole it. Nonplussed by the ending too. Possibly because it didn’t feel that TC was actually that arsed. He has no range. 5/10 for me.

edited for sense 😂

I thought it was piss boring when it came out and I’m a big fan of Kubrick’s work usually.

ChilternsHD · 24/09/2025 23:43

I believe the screenwriter wrote a book about making the film - I don't know if he was happy with it or not.

I saw it a long time ago and couldn’t understand why it was so hyped up. I found it a bit boring.

Purepepp · 25/09/2025 07:49

I've seen a handful of Nicole Kidman films, and I think she gets her bum out in every one

chunkybear · 25/09/2025 08:31

I quite liked it, I may watch it again as it’s been donkeys years since I last saw it. I like some bizarre films albeit Mulholland drive is a bit too weird for me!
