Dd(10) is learning about works war two at school and is fascinated! We planned to watch a film this afternoon and I was thinking I could show her a war themed one.

What films are good for this age that are related to World War Two? Thank you

There was a drama about Italian nuns who sheltered Jewish children- can’t remember the title though . It might be suitable.

Goodnight Mister Tom

That's a really lovely film, it gets quite dark at one point, though.

Conspiracy of Hearts from 1960 - PG for "mild violence" so should be fine.

Ethel and Ernest is very good.

I would agree with pp - definitely not The Boy in the Striped Pajamas .
Carrie's War is a good book, and f there's an adaptation, try that?

Yes it’s horrific but why shouldn’t children understand the realities of the Holocaust? Not everything needs to be sanitised. Look at the state of the world at this current time. We need to be reminded of what can happen if it’s allowed to

... because it's not the realities of the Holocaust. A starving enslaved child in a death camp would not have the energy ot opportunity to develop a friendship. He have got nowhere near the fence, he would have been shot.
The boy on the outside would not have been able to get near to the fence.
The actual realities of the Holocaust are best taught to those older than age 10. In secondary schools, it's yr9.

Edited

To add to that.

The general theme is that the Jews were passive and the holocaust was just something that happened and they didn't fight back.

There is the implication that if a child could get in / out then so could the adult, they just didn't bother.

The organisations that are experts on holocaust education see it as a big problem and they are the experts.

Thank you, @sashh . Good points.

Please not this. It is a terrible story that could never happen.

I wouldn't recommend the dam busters just because of the name of the dog and the huge number of deaths caused by it.

The great escape isn't that great when it gets to the murder of the escapees.

And Bridge over the River Kwai is not, IMHO, suitable for a 10 year old.

A matter of life and death is set during the war but not actually about it, I think it would be fine for a 10 year old.

They drove all night - basically women in the army driving all night, it is a propaganda film.

Operation Mincemeat would be good but there are a couple of explicit sex scenes so you would have to edit it. I wish they would do films like they used to, where they were cut to be shown on airlines.

Hidden in Silence a polish teenager rescues Jews from the Ghetto, it is based on a true story.

There is a more modern version of the story called The Light in Hidden Places.

The six triple 8 - The only coloured (using that word in it historical context) women's army Corp to serve in Europe.

I probably see TDB about once every year or 2. The dog’s name has been overdubbed to Trigger for a good 30 years.

Heavens, at one point in my life I used to walk past "that dogs" grave most days...shame on me for not doing "something" about it..🤐

To not watch a half decent film because of the name, especially now it's so often dubbed to avoid offence, does seem a bit extreme.

And the 1300 - 1500 people who drowned? Mostly people enslaved by the Germans.

I know that is not actually in the film but I assumed the OP and DD would be discussing the film and its place in the war.
