Anyone else been to see this? Was really looking forward to it but rather disappointed by changes to the plot.

Not clever enough.
All 3 interesting sub plots/red herrings binned.
How are they going to get Bogdan out of jail for film 2?

BUT

Inspired casting.
Looked lovely.
And I would watch Jonathan Pryce do ANYTHING.

HeronPond · 22/08/2025 23:45

What plot elements were changed?

ExcellentDesign · 22/08/2025 23:48

I'm going on Sunday. I've heard that it's beem streamlined from the book which I didn't enjoy as there were too many irrelevant plotlines, in fact it might have been a DNF it was so tedious, I remember thinking I couldn't care less whodunnit towards the end. But DH loved it and wants to see it and the cast excellent.

AnneElliotfanclub · 23/08/2025 00:06

I won't give away the big plot change because some people won't have seen it yet, but it doesn't make any sense for this book or the later ones. Agree that most of the cast were excellent but Pierce Brosnan definitely isn't right as Ron.

I saw it earlier in week - really disappointed by all plot changes, bad casting and it's imo very disappointing - I went with DH who doesn't know book and he felt it was very contrived - probably because lots of the booker twists etc has been ditched

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 23/08/2025 00:50

Saw it today, didn’t mind it, it’s easy watching. But I agree, the plot change doesn’t make sense. Pierce Brosnan is definitely not how I imagined Ron at all, but I think he gets away with it because of his superb acting and comic timing skills. The casting I really can’t get on board with is Henry Lloyd-Hughes, absolutely nothing like how Bogdan should be and unlike PB, doesn’t bring anything to the table that makes up for it.

I did enjoy the film, however I was disappointed that it strayed from the book. I questioned myself several times thinking I couldn't remember this bit in the book 😂
I thought the casting of Elizabeth, Stephen, Joyce and Donna were the best and enjoyed watching all of them on screen.
I'm interested how they will do the next one based on how they changed one of the major plot lines!

snemrose · 23/08/2025 20:36

I love the books and love Richard Osman and I desperately want to love the film but I have a horrible feeling I am going to be disappointed 🙁
I don’t think they should have gone for so many big name stars.

user9064385631 · 23/08/2025 20:40

PB is not how I pictured Ron! The others though are perfectly cast.
Really hope I enjoy the film, the books were lovely easy holiday reading.

NuffSaidSam · 23/08/2025 20:52

I haven't seen it and won't because I can't possibly see PB as Ron. That's terrible casting.

I'm also not keen on HM as Elizabeth, but that's probably my dislike for HM rather than bad casting because she is an obvious Elizabeth.

That's an interesting first post @LoftyRedTiger !

I haven't seen the film yet (waiting for it to come out on Netflix) but I thought for ages it was going to be serialised. A six- or even four-parter on a Sunday evening makes far more sense to me. Can you imagine if the BBC had done it over Christmas 😍

Is loftyredtiger post the one that is deleted and now shows as Lisa Johnson? That’s weird

ExcellentDesign · 24/08/2025 10:01

Lofty's post has completely disappeared not showing as deleted. It was obvious AI generated spam

How strange to not even show it as a deleted message. I wonder why mn do that?

Not sure, but glad it wasn't just me who saw it; I was questioning my marbles.

I was too! I don’t like seeing things and then being ‘told’ I hadn’t seen it - doesn’t help with my mh and I think it is bad of mn to do that!

Hmm I’ve reported it to mnhq because completely removing a post without any evidence it was ever there is not ok to me

I've seen them do it before. Perhaps they do it with spam/bot posts?

Yep, I didn't look it up, but seemed like it. Similar, or alternative versions.

ExcellentDesign · 24/08/2025 13:28

It seemed to be promoting some streaming service I'd never heard of

ExcellentDesign · 24/08/2025 21:38

Just got back from the cinema, I really enjoyed it, but I didn't enjoy the book so didn't mind that the plotlines were changed. Yes, it seemed contrived but the great acting and fabulous settings and scenery made up for it.

MamaBobo · 24/08/2025 21:49

Saw it last night and was so disappointed. Plot change aside (WTAF), the nuanced and rounded characters from the books had been turned into shallow caricatures, Joyce’s voice completely lost, Chris reduced to a pathetic cliché, the realistic portrayal of a retirement community exchanged for a weird fantasy castle, Fairhaven turned into a pathetic Midsomer Murders parody of an English village for the Netflix audience. Absolutely awful.

mnahmnah · 24/08/2025 21:54

I’m really confused - where have people seen it?! I thought it was just a Netflix thing so have been waiting for it this Thursday!

Just checked and it’s not on at my local very large Vue. Is it another channel on tv?

ExcellentDesign · 24/08/2025 22:08

It's on at Reel cinemas, we've got one locally, none of the big chains.
