What is this film? Not Prisoners

SPOILERS FOR PRISONERS*

So DH and I watched Prisoners tonight. We have watched it before. Both of us have mis-remembered the ending where Jake Gyllenhal finds the abducted girl at the end and must be thinking of another film. But we can’t for the life of us work out what this film is.

It’s basically a male detective goes to a house for some reason and while he is there he realises that the abducted child is there (this bit is similar to Prisoners). There are lots of stairs and the top part of the house is not finished and the child might be hidden behind a wall. The abducter is there also and there is a shoot-out and it’s all a bit of a race against time. The detective saves the child but is shot and is dying and I think then back-up arrives.

Anyone know as it’s driving me mad!!! DH thinks it’s Gone Baby Gone but I don’t think it is. The detective is very similar to Jake Gylengal in Prisoners I think.

Also it might not be a child; it could be a woman instead.

Is it Carry On Camping?

BrandyandGinger · 21/06/2025 23:38

I know it's a television series but that scenario happens in Mare of Easttown. Could that be it?

MiddlingMarch · 21/06/2025 23:39

Along came a spider? Although Morgan Greeman not Jake Gylenhaal.

Hmmmmm, this is a possibility. I’ve read the episode listing and it does sound similar. I think I’m going to watch the episode to see. Thanks for posting as I would have never have thought of this in a million years!

The captive with Ryan Reynolds?

Hermiaxx · 22/06/2025 10:42

Do you mean Joaquin Phoenix in ‘You were never really here’?

Rollergirl11 · 22/06/2025 11:01

@BrandyandGinger thank you so much, I’ve just watched the episode and it was that I was thinking of!

@Hermiaxx that’s a good shout too as very similar storyline and I have seen that film. But when Joaquin Phoenix rescues the daughter in that film it isn’t in a rundown house. Whereas I specifically remembered the girl being trapped behind something and there being lots of wooden beams and tarpaulin.

It is deffo the episode of Mare of Eastown and I misremembered as it’s quite similar to Jake Gylenhal in Prisoners as he realises once there that the girl is in the house and he is injured and almost dies freeing her.

I thought Prisoners was a good film, also Zodiac had a similar atmosphere, so will look at the others mentioned here, thanks

EddieMunson · 22/06/2025 12:02

I was thinking it sounds like the end of Gone Baby Gone, where

SPOILER

Morgan Freeman’s character takes in the abducted girl

EddieMunson · 22/06/2025 12:03

Oh, I realise now you’ve already discounted that film!

I'm extremely pleased to have helped. I feel like I won a quiz.
Mare of Easttown was great. I only saw it a few months ago, so it's still fresh in my mind.

This was exactly what came to my mind.
