Bear No GIF

Only got half way through Mountainhead on HBO starring Steve Carrell as one of 4 ‘tech billionaire bros’ who together face a crisis from the sanctuary of their alpine mansion.

The acting is very good but the characters - semi psychopathic tech billionaires, are nauseating. They talk fast and in their ‘silicon valley’ jargon language that might as well be another language.

I understood the gist of it - a cautionary tale on the perils of fake news & AI but found it just utterly boring. The characters were so cold, numb and egocentricsl and manic at times that it made me honestly a bit sick. Although it’s essentially 4 billionaires talking in a mansion, it’s very dark. I think it’s just the emptiness, fakeness and ego of their characters.

I wonder if Silicon Valley is really like this and the main “friends” in the trump administration are.

One Of the worst movies I’ve ever watched - utterly boring.

Yeah the whole film was completely pointless tbh. Not sure what it was meant to be but it wasn't funny, or dramatic, just boring! The house and views were the most interesting thing about it lol

I found it boring too and gave up more quickly than you. Characters don’t have to be likeable but we have to connect with them in some way to give a shit and keep watching.

Yes, I agree. I love Jesse's writing but this feels very much like a by-product of the script waste from Succession. I note all of Succession's writing team get a credit here so I'm guessing this was filled with stuff they didn't get to use then.

It speeds up a bit in the last 20mins and feels more like the satire they were reaching for - but that still didn't warrant its two hour build up.

I will finish it while doom scrolling US politics and Elons crash out - I cannot imagine what this is doing for mental health 🤗.
