Saw the best movie in a long time: The Teacher

I suppose it's considered a Palestinian movie, although the credits give the impression that the impetus and funding is British.

There are three main characters: the eponymous high-school teacher, his teenage student Adam who's a neighbor in his village, and a young British woman who's a kind of social worker colleague at the school. I'm trying to figure out what to post without revealing any of the surprises. Basically, it's a grim view of the tensions with Israelis, with the Palestinians constantly harassed and yearning for revenge. The teacher, played by Saleh Bakri (a prominent Palestinian actor, though unknown to me), is the calming rational influence for the more hot-headed boys. It takes a while for the plot to become apparent, but there are a lot of good twists, and each of the three shows remarkable courage.

Apart from everything else, I think everyone should see movies like this because they show us a totally different life than our own. In this case, with a bunch of sub-plots, several different lives. Oh, and I discovered after the fact that the director is a woman - not surprising because it's a very intimate film.

I hope people go - preferably going as unknowing as I was, with no prior knowledge.

What channel is it on?

MsAmerica · 25/04/2025 23:55

It's a new movie. It was in a THEATER. With people. The way movies are supposed to be seen.

Well it was a reasonable question because I don’t think it’s in the cinemas here actually.

Are you aware this is a British site? Wind your neck in, girl.

ChristopherM · 28/04/2025 08:55

Is it available in Cinemas? I don't think so. Where can I watch it online?

No need to be so rude - the pp was only asking.

It seems to be available on Netflix. Not currently on general release.

Why give this response? It's actually not on general release in cinemas in the UK, although please correct me if I'm wrong.
I see it's on Netflix.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 28/04/2025 10:21

The one on Netflix is a different film. I can’t find the Palestinian one available anywhere in the UK.

Ok, it seems to have the same title, so that's very confusing.

It is, yes, it’s an Indian film.

On the film’s website there’s a section to enter your email to find info re your country (UK) and I put my email in but haven’t heard anything so I don’t think it’s available anywhere in the UK at the moment.

We don’t go to the CINEMA to watch films which aren’t released yet.

Brits don't go out to the cinema?

Brits go to the cinema all the time. But you know us, we prefer to see a film that’s actually showing at the cinema rather than camping in the foyer for months on end. We’re just weird like that.

CrownCoats · 29/04/2025 21:46

MsAmerica · 29/04/2025 21:15

Brits don't go out to the cinema?

We go to the cinema, yes. And when we want to see actually people performing on an actual stage, we go to the theatre.

Since the majority of films are available to watch online and this is a UK site, it was a reasonable assumption that you were recommending something that was readily available online, and not a new release in the states.

Yes, that always annoying. It's perfectly legal to use the same title, but usually seems like a bad idea.

Anyone in the UK can now see this film on a Palestinian subscription channel called the Watermelon. When I first read this thread it wasn’t available in the UK but I signed up to be notified when it was, and the email came through today. It says for one month it’s $7.99 so I’m not sure how it works from here, I haven’t signed up for it yet.
