I'm looking for a movie: 2 dogs carrying a basket with a baby in it

I'm looking for a movie. This is what I remember from its content: two dogs carrying a basket with a baby in it. I assume that there were problems beforehand that led to the baby being left alone. The two dogs look after the baby. Presumably they intend to carry the baby home. The carrying looked like this: Each of the two dogs carried the basket from one side with their muzzle. The basket was between the dogs while they were carrying the baby. Whenever a scene was shown in which the dogs were carrying the basket, a humorous melody was played. It was not a serious movie but a rather humorous one.

I'm originally from Germany, but I've lived in the UK for a long time. As a child, I saw this movie on TV in Germany around Christmas time in the 1970s. The original language of the movie is certainly English. I don't know if the movie was also shown in the UK around Christmas time.

Can anyone help me? That would be great!

Was it animation?

What types of dog were they?

Am wondering if it could've been some kind of Lassie special, or Littlest Hobo.

Thank you lovingmememe and Tomatocutwithazigzagedge for your interest. It was a normal movie but not an animation. I can't remember the breed of the dogs. Both dogs looked very similar, so they probably belonged to the same breed. They were not collies. So they didn't look like Lassie. They could possibly have been sheepdogs (like Littlest Hobo) or something similar. They weren't bright, so they were dark in color.
The movie was set somewhere in the country where there is a lot of space.
I also really hope someone recognizes the movie.

@appleandpeartree

Is it a scene from Susi und Strolch, OP?

Thank you for your interestTheSquareMile.. It's not a cartoon. It's a normal movie.

@appleandpeartree

I'm trying to think of what this might be, OP. My guess is that it was filmed in either the US or Australia as it's not ringing any bells with me.

Which channel would you have seen it on? Do you think that it was shown regularly in Germany?

When you say the 1970s, are you thinking early 70s or later?

AlbertCampion · 14/02/2025 15:19

Could it be a scene from Homeward Bound?

Could it be a scene from Homeward Bound?

That was my immediate thought!

The original was The Incredible Journey.

@TheSquareMile
At that time, there were only 2 main channels in Germany. These were called the “first program” and the “second program”. Instead of “first program” you could also say “ARD”. Instead of “the second program” you could also say “ZDF”. The movie was certainly shown on one of the two main channels. So it was in the regular TV program.

I think the movie was rarely shown in Germany. I saw it at a special time, namely at Christmas time.

The movie was probably shown in the second half of the 1970s, between 1975 and 1979.

I also assume that the movie was shot either in the USA or in Australia.

@AlbertCampion, @TwentyKittens: Thank you for your interest. But it wasn't Homeward Bound or The Incredible Journey. Because there is no basket with a baby in it. But your comments help me clarify something about the movie. It is not a movie about 2 dogs. It's a movie about a family or something like that. Only 10 or 20 percent of the movie is about the 2 dogs.
