Just wondering if it was any good?

OP posts:

The trailer has popped up a few times on my SM feeds. Aside from the subject matter of the film, I find Nicole Kidman's face very off-putting fro what I've seen. She seems to be wearing the same shocked wide eyed expression in all the scenes.

houserenohelp · 26/01/2025 07:26

I saw it without watching the trailer oops 🤣 it was ok
I'm hoping movie choices at the cinema improves soon as I like going

Oh but there is a plot - it is just a bit hidden behind the steamy sex and you have to work it out for yourself. SPOILER ALERT!!! The character Esme is key. She orchestrates the whole thing to get leverage for a big promotion. That is the story line. It is about women scheming to break through the glass ceiling and role reversals.

SPOILERS

Thanks for that, mugglewump. I wondered about that plot line, but wasn't clear. I wondered if Esme and the Dickenson character had been scheming together because he ends up with a good role too.

Also, I didn't understand the images at the end with him training the dog. Was it really his dog then at the start? If so, how did he engineer it that to have the dog react at the exact moment that Kidman was walking down the street? How did he know that she was inclined to be BDSM or whatever she was from the start? Most confusing.

At the end of the film Kidman's colleague seemed to suggest that he could give her what Dickenson had given her. Was everyone in that firm BDSM, or is the film making a point about the corporate world....actually, I think I'm losing the will to live when it comes to this film.

RayonSunrise · 26/01/2025 10:19

@MaryWhitehouseExperienced I took the flashbacks to Samuel & the dog to be Romy's fantasy when she was with her husband (who was already repeating the same act she'd experienced with Samuel), so though she and he had moved on she was still tapping into her memory of the affair.

And the colleague propositioning her at the end was just bog standard sexism, and a comment about why sexual desire is complex and not always rational. There were rumours about what had happened and her colleague decided she was "just a woman" instead of his boss, and to try it on. The problem for him is that she needs to be in control ans well as to occasionally give control to someone else, so she would never in a million years consider his proposition. That's why she told him to get back in his box.

Fluffyhoglets · 26/01/2025 21:38

I thought it was very good. Excellent acting from both main characters in such vulnerable sexually graphic roles and as a previous poster said it showed the madness of an affair perfectly.
NK looks great and its part of the plot that shows the upkeep she goes through to look that good.
The awkwardness of some of the scenes were well acted and it's funny in places because of this.
I loved the soundtrack as well.

I really enjoyed it. Loved Harris and found him so sexy. Would secretly love a relationship like that (or try it at least).

Whereas I would be interested it if I found the male lead more attractive but he does nothing for me.

Inspirationpending · 26/01/2025 22:48

It could’ve been so good but isn’t
I took the scene at the end with him training the dog to as a representing Romy’s fantasies. The husband was very forgiving!

MaryWhitehouseExperienced · 27/01/2025 07:33

It was very difficult for me to believe that it would be more exciting to go to bed with Harris Dickinson than with Antonio Banderas. Banderas' accent alone would be enough.

Ha! Yes, how on earth?

I think this is the main problem with the film tbh.

paranoidnamechanger · 27/01/2025 11:58

I don’t know what the two main characters saw in each other. Maybe I’m confusing this with the actors lack of chemistry.

RayonSunrise · 27/01/2025 13:28

TBH a lot of affairs leave outsiders wondering why someone would risk their marriage/spouse/children's happiness for a few tawdry shags. I don't mind that I didn't relate to Romy or want to be her, I still thought the story was interesting.

My main issue was that I thought Samuel was too much of a cypher. There was one moment when he was "asking" Romy to listen to him like a therapist, and it almost seemed like we'd learn more about him - but then we didn't.

Not difficult to have a relationship like that. But usually disappointing in real life.

Yes, ditto!

We saw it. It passed the time but dragged. I'd give it 4 out of 10.

colouringindoors · 29/01/2025 20:50

I went with very low expectations and found it quite interesting. No, not a lot of plot and bdsm was unconvincing. For me it was more an exploration of power and who holds it. I liked how Nicole's character dealt with the sleazy boss at the end - she had the power. Would she have responded the same pre affair? Esme's role in the affair was ambiguous to me. But she exerted her power at the end... Glad I saw it. Excellent acting from Nicole Kidman imho

Just wondering if it was any good?

I watched it, the first 20 minutes in was like why is this dragging on? The first intimate scene I felt they focused on her face I guess to show the enjoyment of it? (40 mins in he does something she gets mad, he gets mad that she's mad threatening to quit and by that make a call that she can lose everything including family) she finding ways to have a one on one so as that time comes he tells her for this to work you do as I say, she rolled her eyes and he was like fine I'm gonna make the call she seems worried but I think it's just her wanting to feel that hot, steamy intimacy she craves, so he continues to make "threats" but so far it started to piss me off bc I'm like she's right he is a child, a child that has mommy issues bc she's a mother and he said earlier in the movie "seems like your a mom and i don't want that" lol like what? But you gotta watch it to understand it, I couldn't I kept going hoping it'd get better but nope.

mrsogrady · 30/01/2025 20:04

I just found it dull. Could have been so much better. Not sure that I rate Nicole Kidman as an actor and she was pretty wooden in this role.
The whole span of the affair seems to take place within the timeframe of Christmas decorations being up - that's the meeting, the affair three trips to their weekend house and the resolution and aftermath. No wonder the plot seemed rushed and superficial!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/01/2025 20:47

I wondered the same about the Christmas decs! @mrsogrady

FMc208 · 30/01/2025 21:05

@mrsogrady apparently it was set over a year, and they weren’t the same Christmas decorations.

TuesdaysAreBest · 31/01/2025 08:51

Fatal attraction had more dramatic tension. Apparently it was one of the films the director of Baby Girl wanted the actors to watch. Spoiler—here, though, it seemed there was no threat of her husband discovering the affair until she actually told him in plain words. Overall I liked it, though. The George Michael song stayed with me for weeks!

ThisOpalPlayerkaz · 02/02/2025 00:19

I'm sorry watching it now. I have never seen something so bloody boring .
It's all mental mate 😡

Lolski28 · 02/02/2025 00:49

Didn’t enjoy at all
sorry I bothered

LightDrizzle · 02/02/2025 01:00

Despite a promising cast I thought it was crap and cringy. Not thrilling, not erotic, not anything really.

isitspringyet · 22/03/2025 11:06

Very odd film just got flashbacks of George Galloway and Rula Lenska from celebrity big brother
