Highly recommend this film

The guy who plays Ian Curtis is a fantastic actor. Really captures the isolation and loneliness IC must have felt

I didn't realise he was only 23 when he took his own life

Agree totally. I didn't really know anything about Ian Curtis or Joy Division, but was captivated by this film. Samantha Morton is great in it too, as his wife.

notnowbernard · 03/05/2008 15:33

I had heard of Ian Curtis and Joy Division and knew he had killed himself, but knew very little beyond that

But the film was so good I felt I understood what was going on for him

Agree re Samantha Morton

Excellent music, too

Love Joy Division, but I'll admit to being a bit apprehensive about seeing the film. I thought it was great though, and I'm not normally a big fan of biopics.

notnowbernard · 03/05/2008 15:47

Dp thought the lead actor did a great job in mimicing his actual stage performance style

Apparently people couldn't always tell if he was dancing or having a seizure (Looked this up on Wikipedia earlier)

The live stuff was performed by the actors rather than them miming to the original tracks, and I thought that was bloody brilliant too.

iamdingdong · 03/05/2008 19:36

totally agree, it is a great film

notnowbernard · 03/05/2008 20:09

Apparently The Killers performed one of the tracks featured in the film for the purpose of the film, IYSWIM

Might now investigate some Joy Division stuff thanks to this film

I was a huge JD fan in my teens (after his death), a family friend got me into them. Closer is a really good album for moping to, especially when you're a teen.

notnowbernard · 03/05/2008 20:14

Will check that out, Ranting

I know nothing of their music

Was 3 when IC died!

3!! I was 9. Didn't discover JD until I was about 14 though. Told a family friend that I liked Echo and The Bunnymen and her son started to send me tapes of bands he thought I would like. Loved them.
The band 'The house of Love' are worth checking out too btw.

weeonion · 03/05/2008 20:18

joy division is dp's fav band. through him - have been caught up in the new wave of books, documentaries and now control. he also thought that the lead actor captured iam really well. intersting that it is based on deborah's book - though i think martic (sp?) contributed to the scenes with her and ian. paul morley has also recently published a book recently on them which dp says is truly great! love will tear us apart is still one of the saddest songs ever for me.

weeonion · 03/05/2008 20:19

ranting - house of love are great - their track "christine" is another onion family favourite!

ranting · 03/05/2008 20:20

Excellent track that WO.

notnowbernard · 03/05/2008 21:13

'Love will tear us apart' is written on IC's gravestone, apparently (according to Wikipedia)

Yep, think they show that on the very end of the video for Atmosphere. Sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong though.

notnowbernard · 03/05/2008 21:17

Just Googled the lyrics

Bloody Hell, that can't have been easy listening for anyone

I started a thread on this when I saw it and only got about 3 replies...where were you lot then ?

They filmed it on location in Macclesfield - Barton Street is just round the corner from me. Dh went to see it at our local cinema when it came out (he's a huge JD fan) and the audience cheered every time a recognisable Macc location came on.

Yes, it does say that on the grave - dh went on a pilgrimage on his lunch hour once (sad bugger).

I can't say I'm much of a fan, though I thought the film was excellent. But the House of Love...now you're talking

serenity · 03/05/2008 23:15

Ok, so now I've started it too

Just to help you along
