Please help me remember. It's an older classic, maybe made jn the 50s60s

It's set on a ship. Some sort of power battle with crew and captain/ first mate.

The main character is hung at the end. It's a shocking ending. I know it's a famous classic movie but I just can't remember it

I think the main guy has a stutter and this means he answer something. The first mate does not want to execute him but has to.

Just as he's hung and the enemy attack but it's too late. The rest of the crew say something like "let punish them for arriving a minute too late"

HMS Defiant, directed by Lewis Gilbert, set in the Napoleonic Wars, made in 1962. That ends with a ship’s boy being hanged.
