Please help me find a movie to watch tonight with the family!!

  • DS 12 likes action / dystopian movies; faves include Avengers, Star Wars
  • DD 9 likes teen / romcom movies and likes one of the leads to be a female character; faves include Mean Girls, Pitch Perfect
  • We prefer non-animated as we have seen most of the classic / good animated ones
  • Something that DH and I can enjoy as well
  • Age rating; happy with 12 and possibly a 15 as long as not too graphic or too much swearing

Things we have watched recently and have all enjoyed:
Enola Holmes
Jumanji (old and new)
Hunger Games
Dungeons and Dragons
Harry Potter movies
Honey I shrunk the kids
Spider-Man trilogy (DD lines Zendaya)

Thanks!

The Goonies

CurlewKate · 09/06/2024 14:17

School of Rock.

The Great Lebowski.

MavisTheMonkey · 09/06/2024 14:24

Thanks both
@SingingSands weirdly they didn't like the Goonies

@CurlewKate have seen School of Rock, they quite liked it but not a massive hit. Think the Big Lebowski might be too eccentric for them

Wonder, not sure where you'd find it. I really love this film and recommend it whenever I can.

Similar anges and we’ve enjoyed most of the ones on your list, but a slightly different one that turned out to be quite the hit was Apollo 13.

The fact it was based on a true story made it much more compelling and managed to keep them interested.

Edit: no great female characters though. Good reminder of how times have (hopefully) changed…

PatriciaHolm · 09/06/2024 16:25

Oh just remembered The Princess Bride!

cloudjumper · 09/06/2024 16:26

Another one we've loved watching as a family - Pirates of the Caribbean

MavisTheMonkey · 09/06/2024 16:33

Thanks all, lots on here that we've watched together - Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic park, ready player one and descendants.

Apollo one is one I've suggested before but DD says no; princess brides and fifty first dates I've also suggested and DS says no 🙈😂

Labyrinth and Overboard are too old / dated looking so they both have said no to them previously.

Am going to look at the others suggested now!

Mine (11,13) enjoy Free Guy

lavenderlou · 09/06/2024 17:10

It's an animation, but one we all enjoyed when my DC were that age was The Mitchell's vs the Machines.

Or the new Ghostbusters films? I've only seen the first one but everyone enjoyed it.

fluffypooch · 09/06/2024 17:10

Kangaroo Jack

Wedding singer

MavisTheMonkey · 09/06/2024 17:54

Thanks so much everyone for all the suggestions, a lot we have seen (ghostbuster, back to the future, forest gump, Indiana jones, unfortunate events) but lots to consider as well.

So far I'm keen on:
Love and Monsters
Wonder
Twilight
Free guy

I'm also keen on the maze runner, however DS has read the books and says he doesn't want to watch it as it's too graphic / violent. I see it's a 15 rated so think it might be a bit much. Although the hunger games was also 15 rated and they both really liked that...

Hunger games had worse violence than the Maze Runner films as far as I recall

Wild Child would be good for your dd, but your ds might not be quite so keen.😂
