DD (aged 15) insists I should call him Timothy. But it's a French name!

AIBU to pronounce Timothée Chalamet

My dd is obsessed with him. It’s Timmy if you’re a real fan 😆 that’s what they all call him. Timothy otherwise. Hes bilingual and calls himself Timothy.

Celia24 · 04/12/2023 23:35

Yeah he's addressed this in interviews. He's fine with Timothy because he knows it's easiest!

I also say it properly OP 😁

Speaking as someone who was forever being told by teachers that the way I pronounced my name was wrong: IF HE SAYS IT’S TIMOTHY, THEN IT’S TIMOTHY.

My dd has the same issue. Well she’s not called Timothy, but you know what I mean 😆

In my house he is -
Timmy Champagne
or
Timmy Chamamamalongadingdong
or
"OMG Mum you can't have a crush on him - you're old enough to be his mum"
😂

GreenCereal · 05/12/2023 00:02

In my head I always pronounce it like the shampoo!! I don't think I've ever had to say it out loud though...

flowerchild2000 · 05/12/2023 00:05

He has said in interviews the correct pronunciation is french, but he finds it pretentious so goes with the American pronunciation.

MerryMarigold · 05/12/2023 07:30

Thanks all. I'm not a massive fan (DD is) so I had no idea he called himself that! We're certainly not on good enough terms for me to call him Timmy.

I'm not sure what he means by American pronunciation though. That's like saying Pedro 'in American' is Peter. It's the same name but it's a different language so which language will you use?

I use the French pronunciation. Saying a name correctly is polite, and in many cases, not doing so is something racists do for Asian names especially.

Yeah but he goes with Timothy. Case by case basis surely?

ILikeDinosaurs · 13/12/2023 21:23

If he goes by Timothy then I'd go with that. It's his name. Timothy Chalamet sounds better because Timotay Chalamet rhymes!

If someone tells you how to pronounce their name, you do it as they tell you. It’s rude otherwise. He has said many times in interviews and when he introduces himself it’s Timothy.

ilovesushi · 15/12/2023 10:27

Both myself and DD love him. We call him Timotay Chalomay all rhyming. Not a clue if that is right or not.

cheezncrackers · 15/12/2023 10:28

He says you pronounce it the American way - so Timothy Shalamet.

orangeblosssom · 19/02/2024 08:23

Shampoo version of the name is the correct pronunciation.

Lincslady53 · 26/02/2024 20:31

I first became aware of him in 2020, when just before lockdown, he was cast to play the young Bob Dylan in a film about his first few years, which may be called Going Electric. I looked at his twitter feed, and he really confused some of his younger fans by quoting Dylan. The film was stopped over Covid, but is now back on track. In Wonka there were a few scenes where he was obviously channelling Dylan with some of his expessions. I think he is pefectly cast for the role and am looking forward to seeing the film.

Timotei Chalamet

Timmy just makes me want to go Timmy Chalamallet 😂

upinaballoon · 05/03/2024 21:38

I think he's the young man who was Laurie in 'Little Women'. Right, pronounced good looks.

Pronounced Timothy Shalomay? or does he say Shalomet, as in sounding the t?
