Looking for some really good edge of your seat thrillers to watch

The Birds - my favourite Hitchcock
There's an Audrey Hepburn film called Wait Until Dark that is fantastic. She plays a blind woman who has people break into her apartment.

I quite enjoyed Bad Samaritan with David tenant & Robert Sheehan.

That new Luther film on Netflix is a bit 😳

beguilingeyes · 14/04/2023 18:34

Silence Of The Lambs is proper edge of your seat stuff if you haven't seen it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/04/2023 18:51

We have a great weakness for the original trilogy of Bourne films, especially the third one. Also, almost any Hitchcock film. Where Eagles Dare. It's been a long time since I saw it, but Witness (Harrison Ford).

I love thrillers, crime dramas, mysteries. Quite fussy though, I get annoyed if it is too predictable.

I think they fall into the

  • comedic thrillers - which are good if you want a bit of the edge of the seat stuff but not be put through the wringer,
  • noir, real-life and crime thrillers -which you can get really invested in but might have trouble sleeping,
  • sci-fI and fantasy - for total escapism into another world and
  • psychological thrillers - for a bit of mind-bending puzzling satisfaction and twists.

Comedic thriller recommendations:

  • Knight and Day - Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. It’s fast paced and epic, but the comedic element of Cruise’s character never losing his cool means it is never harrowing. Also Mission Impossible series, Jack Reacher. Cruise has this genre down.

Noir/real life/crime thriller recommendations:

  • Girl With A Dragon Tattoo trilogy.
  • Series rather than films - all of the Scandi Noir - Wallander, The Killing, The Bridge - most are pretty good.
  • Silence of the Lambs is an absolute masterpiece.

Sci-fI and fantasy thriller recommendations:

  • Terminator & Terminator 2 - just perfect. Strong female lead.
  • All the Star Wars films and spin offs.

Psychological thrillers:

  • Memento - a brilliantly twisty story about a man with short term memory loss.
  • Someone mentioned Hitchcock and I think it is worth watching Psycho.
  • Fight Club - brilliant script, acting, twists.
  • The Talented Mr Ripley - a lot of the tension comes from what you bring to it.
  • The Revenant - it’s about surviving against the odds

That’s what comes to me off the cuff, but there are loads if I trawl my memory banks. I am curious to see any recommendations too.

I highly recommend the 2007 George Clooney movie, Michael Clayton. A great thriller film. At the same time, not just your ordinary thriller but a thriller film with so much depth.
