Can't quite articulate into words how I feel about this film (watched last night). When it finished I thought hmmm well that was a bit strange and I don't know what to make of it 😂 I love the previous movies by Jordan peele, us and get out but didn't love this one. If you've seen it what are your thoughts??

I thought it was brilliant!

There's a video on YouTube on CinemaWins (i think) breaking down the sound design and stuff which is really interesting too.

I really enjoyed it but I will watch any film with Daniel Kaluuya. I guess the opposite to the very claustrophobic feel of Get Out with all those expansive landscapes. I liked Get Out more but I think it was more obviously political which I enjoyed. I’m not generally a horror film fan but I would certainly give any Jordan Peele film a watch.

Not seen it but have his others. LOVED Us and found I thought about it for days after and that's what I think is great about JPs work. There's so much horror shit around these days I enjoy how he's ramping it up.

Maybe your subconscious needs a few more days to ponder?

I've heard he's doing a reboot of Amatyville Horror which I'll be very excited about as I have vivid memories of it scaring the shit out of me as a kid.

aibutohavethisusername · 14/02/2023 20:23

I’m the same as you OP, very strange & I’m not sure I got it.

BirdyPig · 14/02/2023 20:25

I absolutely loved Nope.

Did you pick up all the Wizard of Oz nods? Loads of "eye" hidden Easter eggs too.

Shalh · 14/02/2023 20:26

I hated it.

At the time I was really pissed off that I spent a date night and babysitter on it.

Snarf23 · 14/02/2023 20:27

Watched it the other day. Really enjoyed it. Easy Friday night watch.

powershowerforanhour · 14/02/2023 21:15

The acting and cinematography in Nope were good, but Tremors was a better film I thought. The monster in Nope was kind of...disappointing.

Twokidsanddone · 14/02/2023 21:18

Loved us and get out. We were being loaned nope to watch just after New year so watched the other 2 to get us in the mood for it. Was excited then ended up a bit confused. DP loved it. I enjoyed it but it was sort of strange. There were parts i just didn't quite follow why they were happening. Like why was there SO MUCH focus on the monkey?

crochetmonkey74 · 14/02/2023 21:21

I'm a Jordan Peele mega fan. I loved Nope. I found at first I was "mmmmmm" about it. His films are often odd and require thought but I do find myself thinking about them a lot afterwards. The whole bit with the chimp was so unsettling. I love how clever it all is and how much pop culture is referenced

LachrymoseLeeches · 14/02/2023 21:24

I loved it - but admit I didn't get the bit with the chimp either.

wibblewobbleball · 14/02/2023 21:27

One of the worst films I've ever seen!!!

LachrymoseLeeches · 14/02/2023 21:24

I loved it - but admit I didn't get the bit with the chimp either.

It's all about humans trying to "tame the beast".

The horse at the beginning, Gordy, and Jean Jacket the "alien" are all beasts that humans try to control.

Note their reactions to eye contact too, all 3 of them.

Plus the eye references- the dad getting hit in one eye with the coin, the Jupiter inflatable balloon having one eye, the photographer singing one eyed purple people eater.

scoobycute · 14/02/2023 21:32

I liked it, would watch again. Wouldn't necessarily recommend as it is strange and not everyone's cup of tea.

I cannot pinpoint why the chimp unsettled me so much but it was so uncomfortable and bizarre. I think it reminded me of a child? The way they called him Gordy even midst attack. Something very much like child gone wild/rogue/violent.

Loads of symbolism in the film that I don't tend to pick up on until later or after reading reviews.

Overarching themes bring that you can't tame a predator and humans doing anything for entertainment.

BirdyPig · 14/02/2023 21:34

Gordy didn't attack young Jupiter because his eyes were concealed by the tablecloth.

Loads of Easter eggs about eyes and eye contact.

I loved it! Maybe not quite as much as Get Out and Us but still incredible, so powerful. And what Daniel Kaluuya can convey with just his eyes - wowzers.

Lifesyoungdream · 04/04/2023 18:49

I didn’t understand it at all but I think having a couple of glasses of wine and falling asleep through part of it didn’t help😀DS tried explaining it to me but he give up.
Maybe I need to watch it again.

Whiskyski · 09/04/2023 19:59

I hated it. No real depth for me. And just all a bit strange.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 09/04/2023 20:04

Liked it..even if the alien became a blanket type thing at the end. The whole plot with the guy thinking he tamed the chimp and could create a spectacle with the sheet thing only for it to go wrong...poor horses

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/04/2023 20:12

Watched it in the cinema with 18yo dd. Thought it weird but enjoyable. DD's favourite part was the chimp scenes!

LadyKenya · 09/04/2023 20:21

I don't think that I really got what it was all about. I really liked Get out though, and rate Daniel Kaluuya as an actor.

I loved Us and Get Out, but thought Nope was absolutely terrible. Really disappointing.

Twonewcats · 22/04/2023 23:01

I came upon this thread after watching it on Sky.
I LOVED everything about it. I loved that it was all about the risk of taming the beast, and the links to Travis the chimp, which I've always been fascinated by.

Hallionflossie · 21/07/2023 19:13

I agree with wibblewobbleball, dreadful. Also poor acting and errors like a mirrored helmet not protecting the motorcyclist. Thought Get Out was good but will look out for Jordan Peele films in future so I can avoid them.
