The school in Disenchanted is my old secondary school

That's quite a surprise. It's quite a lot greener, more floral and sunnier than it was when I was there. Grin

One of my friends lives in Enniskerry (the location for Monroeville), which is actually as pretty as it appears in the film, if a bit less sunny and more rainy. She was saying that she's planning to move as it's now really popular for filming and it's a pain. It's a small village and the traffic gets massively disrupted and she can't get to any of the shops.

I'm struggling a bit with the film. It doesn't have the charm of Enchanted.

Perhaps a prettier school, less brutally 70s, might have helped? Grin

Name changed for this! I haven't seen Disenchanted yet so don't know which school it is, but we live very near the flowery pink house in the film (which isn't actually in Enniskerry), and spent several months giving directions to lost tourists looking for the house. The sets in Enniskerry looked amazing, but all the filming must be very disruptive for the residents as you say.

The school is Wesley (not a secret, the school put it on on their FB page).

I think the trouble with Enniskerry is that the conjunction of several roads meeting in a very pretty square is attractive, but also means that a lot of roads are blocked. If you live on one side of the village and need to do a school run for the other side then you have to go the long way through a load of tiny country roads, along with every other commuter/school parent in the area.

My school was allegedly the inspiration for daleks. Seems a bit rubbish in comparison.

I do know that Buffy and Beverly Hills 90210 used the same school.

Flowersandvines · 23/11/2022 22:17

Aha! I thought you were going to say it was somewhere older until the brutalist comment. I'll have to watch the film. Familiar with Wesley from standing around at DCs' hockey matches... (and driving past on the way to Dundrum).
The other thing about the congestion in Enniskerry is the number of new houses being built - couldn't believe how built up it is getting when we went up to look at the sets.

The inspiration for Daleks sounds intriguing...

Doctor Who filmed at my school one summer. It was really weird to see all the photos of daleks and cybermen in various mundane places!

more recently it was the location for a music video too

😁 there is a series on Netflix that is filmed in my home town...
The main character even goes on a first date in the same place I did many gazillion years ago. The best part is, this place hasn't changed at all!

Really? It's gorgeous. I had to google it to find out it's in Ireland. Thought they filmed it in America!!

There seems to be quite a bit of filming in Ireland, both North and RoI. There's a number of reasons I think, there are lower costs than the US, good availability of skilled workers and a wide range of different scenery without travelling very far. There's a lot of filming around Vancouver too, for much the same reasons. I'm pretty sure that the New York and possibly some indoor scenes in Disenchanted were filmed in the US though.

I've watched both seasons of Fate: The Winx Saga on Netflix even though it's a fairly so-so fairy story aimed at teenagers because they filmed it all in Wicklow and it genuinely looks like fairy land.

Superman 4 filmed at my school, In and around the science block.
It was the first time I realised they filmed stuff that doesn't make it into the movie because Christopher Reeve was swinging around the sports field on a crane, taking off and landing. Us students were watching through the main building windows when we were supposed to be doing lessons. None of the outside stuff is in the movie.

The school has been knocked down and rebuilt since.

Christopher Reeve was my favourite Superman. It must have been very exciting to see him in action.

Pretty unforgettable, my best friend regretted bunking off that day. Unfortunately we kept being told to get on with the lesson so we didn't see too much of Christopher Reeve in action, he wasn't there very long.
It was cool to see how it all worked, I had no idea before that they harnessed him up to a crane.
