Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins at their absolute best but Jesus, I feel totally wrecked after watching it.

It's on Netflix.

Anyone else seen it?

@crossstitchingnana that was the part that got me the most utterly heartbreaking.

I saw this last week. Quite astounding and makes you understand the confusion. Heartbreaking for all.

Do you think Ann really moved to Paris? I thought the husband did really hit him, but I guess that's the issue. A ball of confusion so impossible to know for sure.

Actually, she might've dumped him because of that and moved to Paris with new husband who we didn't see. I'm sure that as mentioned right at the beginning. She did move to Paris if what the nurse said was true.

“The Father” is unquestionably one of the best films of 2020, with a plethora of positive aspects and worth seeing. Zeller’s own play, “The Father”, was written in 2012 and translated into English by Christopher Hampton, a leading expert in the field also listed as a co-writer. This is the first installment of a trilogy; the sequels “The Mother” and “The Son” were similarly well-received.

I’ve just watched it, what an incredible film.

”I feel like I’m losing my leaves” 🥲

Superb acting. I went through this with my DM and we are now going through it with my FIL.
DH couldn’t watch it, understandably.

I wondered if it was the nurse, Bill, who actually hit him? But the thought was almost too sad to think about really.

The Son is being made as a film, apparently.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/08/2022 21:26

I didn't realise there were others, look forward to it!

I've just finished watching it. I'm floored, so beautiful, so sad, so cleverly done. You really felt the confusion. I absolutely love Anthony Hopkins. Fabulous.

Just watched it, had no idea of what it was about before hand. Totally agree with your comment.
Still feeling quite emotional. A heartbreaking, beautiful and clever film.

The companion film 'The Son' is being shown at the London Film Festival in October. Not sure if it will have a wider release.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/09/2022 21:18

I hope so, I'd love to see it.

I think this film really gave me an idea what it must be like to have Dementia/Alzheimer's.

Before watching this I understood that people forget/get confused/loose their memory.
But watching it from the patient's perspective makes you really understand just how scary, frustrating and awful it must be for them. Utterly terrifying.
I think this is a must watch for everyone.

The movie is a masterpiece- one of the best I've seen.

Really interesting to hear of the production techniques- the carefully chosen interior shots, lost of moving through doorways and similar and ambiguous interiors father's flat/daughter's/flat even the hospital, leaving even the viewer deliberately confused- and with insight into Anthony's confused mind.
Those who found the movie confusing- character changes, locations- it is meant to be confusing.
The use of innovative "soft drop" canvas serving as the street scene when viewed from inside the flat.
Lots of good youtube videos explaining techniques.

The Son is a beautiful film as well, though a difficult watch because of the subject matter. Hope it gets a wide release.

I watched it at the weekend and I thought it was amazing. The last scene is totally heartbreaking. I can't remember the last time I was so drawn into a film.
