Lightyear - contains spoilers

So,

We loved it

But

In, maybe the second movie, in the lift shaft, Buzz says something to Zurg and Zurg declares "I am your father". Which is funny and memorable for Darth-esque reasons.

But in the movie

SPOILER

It's meant to be future him.

Did they just FORGET? Or will there be something in Lightyear 2 where this is resolved?

Also when he's hating on Zurg in the TS movies, are we now meant to think he knows it's future him but hates him anyway? Does Woody know?

Re time travel. So Old Buzz goes out in his ship, comes back, they try to arrest him and he escapes, goes on the run and takes over ship and becomes Zurg. So who is Young Buddy? Did the time line split when he reached hyper speed so one Buzz when back and got arrested and one didn't? And if so is it sufficient to just go back in time if you're on a different time line?

Or perhaps (just thinking this now) was Young Buzz on say run 6, and Old Buzz got to run 7 then fled so he's actually interrupted the time line at an earlier point and disrupted what is meant to happen?

Yes, we're ignoring time loops and consequences of changing your own path

I’m not convinced it actually is / was old Buzz because by the time of the final test flight with the stolen plane, he knew about Izzy. So I thought that was meant to be a big giveaway that it wasn’t actually Buzz.

But then the film went in a different direction. So who knows.

Buzz lightyear in the Toy story films isn't the same character as in Lightyear, so their stories will be different.

ChuckMater · 26/06/2022 19:24

Its thrown a lot of questions around but also the buzz in toy story is a toy based on the light year film, as in they are two seperate people.
I also am confused by the father now being an older buzz. It doesn't make sense. So many questions.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/06/2022 19:37

OK yes sorry, of course Buzz Is just Andys toy so wouldn't know anything about the character he's based on unless they programmed it into him. Fair enough.

Still confused about the "father" or older lightyear thing.

Re Izzy, they'd known about Izzy since she was tiny so guess the time line would have split after that? Or he said this was as early as he'd got so perhaps had met Izzy in the future?

The Buzz in Lightyear is "alive" Buzz Lightyear in as close to human form as possible.

The Buzz Lightear in TS is a mass produced plastic miniature version of "alive" Buzz. As such, I'd imagine his plastic mind is only furnished with the info relevant to make a playable character.

MyBrilliantFriend · 26/06/2022 19:42

The Izzy thing:

So before the final successful flight when Buzz steals the plane, he finds out that Alisha has died & watches her video thing which has Izzy in ie he knows about her before that flight.

Based on what old Buzz says, their timelines split on that final flight - when he steals the plane. So he should already know about Izzy.

But then when he meets young Buzz & young Buzz says he needs to get back for Izzy or whatever, they make a big thing in the film of Old Buzz saying ‘who’s Izzy’ & it seems like that comment changes young Buzz’s mind about doing what old Buzz tells him. I thought because he works out it can’t be him because he knew who Izzy was before the final test flight.

i may have overthought it 😂

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/06/2022 19:44

Maybe Zurg in TS refers to himself as BL father because he was the "first" Buzz and as such all further Buzzs are his offspring.

Maybe the toy manufacturers placed the thought into Zurgs motherboard because they were a massive fan of Star Wars and needed a backstory as to why BL and Z would be connected.

Maybe Zurg in Lightyear isn't Buzz from another time line but Buzzs actual father and we will find out in future Lightyear movies.

CountessOfSponheim · 26/06/2022 19:46

That specific Zurg toy and that specific Buzz toy in the second film are convinced that they are each other's father/son. It doesn't have to be a universal thing.

There's a nod to it in Lightyear when Buzz thinks for a moment that older Buzz is his own father.

If you need an in-universe explanation, maybe it would turn out in a 1997 sequel to Lightyear that Zurg is actually Buzz's father, or older Buzz could go back in time and team up with Buzz's father, or there's just a popular in-universe fan theory that that's going to happen.

Man I'm just gonna have to wait for Lightyear 2 and by then ALL my kids will be old enough to see it so I won't even be able to concentrate properly

I think chances of a Lightyear 2 in this universe are zero as it's (unfairly IMO) tanking at the box office.

Noooooo DS will never forgive them. Those end credit scenes took SO long to get to.

I think ti's problem is not being funny enough.
