just made me squirm, i think, because of the bump and grind. i think it was supposed to make me squirm, though.

Magdelanian · 06/01/2008 00:47

Aitch, think the dance was what made it so good.

harpsichordcarrier · 06/01/2008 00:48

more than the rest of the pageant stuff though?

OP posts:
Aitch · 06/01/2008 00:53

in a different way. i did like it very much, but was proper squicked by the dancing.

AnnainNZ · 06/01/2008 00:53

Was meant to make us squirm. Grandfather taught the girl v inappropriate dance.

(Dont want to give it all away to Mrs JC. Watch it now - tis Sunday afternoon after all!)

Interesting point I just read on wikipedia, that her dance is seen as inappropriate yet all the other girls in pageant have make up on, hairspray, little dresses etc - that's acceptable (to pageant organisers, parents etc)

harpsichordcarrier · 06/01/2008 12:56

yes and they were wearing their usual costumes and doing their usual routines.

it is brilliant

i loved the van as well - it was a character too which i thought was witty

the little girl, Olive was wonderful

would happily see it again

TheYoungVisiter · 06/01/2008 13:05

oh brilliant brilliant brilliant.

I normally hate precocious child actresses but Abigail Breslin was lovely - winning without trying, and sweet in the best possible sense of the word.

stepfordwife · 06/01/2008 13:06

you've all inspired me to dust off the DVD i bought yonks ago and actually watch it this evening. you get so caught up in watching kids' films, you forget you're allowed to watch YOUR choices too, eh?
can't wait!
thanks

filthymindedvixen · 06/01/2008 13:18

I adore this film - think whasserface (muriel's wedding agh Toni whassername) is fantastic.
Even my dh who is hard to please loved it - though we watched the dance routine through our fingers, simultaneously laughing and cringing.

harpsichordcarrier · 06/01/2008 13:21

I honestly can't ever remember laughing so much at a film - but yes we both watched the end with our mouths wide open and our hands clamped over them.

It's one of the best movies in a long time. Love the whole disfuntional family theme, makes mine look normal!

hatwoman · 06/01/2008 13:42

I agree it's wonderful. in fact so sharp and thinking it's perfect. the dance at the end is the whole point! the whole film is about hypocrisy. and the reaction to the dance is the ultimate hypocrisy. the girl gets the dance so wrong - she's awkard, can't move well, she looks like a child dressing up. which is what children in high heels and make up should look like. all the rest look hideous in their sophistication. they are far more sexualised, far more adultified (I think I just made word that up) than our heroine. I loved it.

And I'm not sure about the dysfunctional thing. It's a while since I watched it but, in a similar vein to the whole dance thing, isn't the film meant to challenge us about what we think to be dysfunctional?

anyway, I agree tis a superb film. poetry in every way.

LazyLinePainterJane · 06/01/2008 13:53

I loved it.

Also saw Eagle vs Shark last night and that was excellent, in a similar style.

I quite liked it, I don't think it's the best film I've ever seen though.

Actually, I thought it was a fake but a good fake. Was so self-consciously quirky and unusual, without really being so.

DarrellRivers · 06/01/2008 14:02

one of my favourite films of last year.
reminds me of my family and everyone else's , i think dysfunctional actually = normal

Aitch · 06/01/2008 20:20

tell you a film i enjoyed recently. Knocked Up. did not expect that it would be a rather sweet romance, thought it would be sexist and ghastly.

Tnog · 06/01/2008 20:25

I enjoyed it.

Found it delightfully quirky.

PestoMonster · 06/01/2008 20:36

My favourite film of 2007

francagoestohollywood · 06/01/2008 20:41

maybe not the best film I've ever seen but it was smart, funny, I really enjoyed it. my favourite 2007 movie was the lives of others I think.

ScaryHairy · 06/01/2008 20:41

One of my favourites too.
I love how the family comes together at the end. It's not often that a film makes me cry both sad and LMAO tears.

binklegoestoLondon · 06/01/2008 20:46

thought the ending let the whole film down but apart from that pretty good film
