Sublime. The best film I have seen in years. Riz Ahmed is a true talent.

Anyone else seen it? Amazon Prime.

OP posts:

I've seen the trailer and can't wait to see it.Love Riz Ahmed.

Eminybob · 14/04/2021 22:05

Thanks, I’ve just added it to my watchlist

AlinaSquareQueen · 15/04/2021 12:55

Yes I watched this as soon as it came out on Amazon Prime.

It was an amazing film. Riz Ahmed should win the Oscar for his performance, but he probably won’t.

I thoroughly recommend it.

billydilly · 17/04/2021 00:34

Quite extraordinary. I've loved Riz Ahmed in everything but this was a career best.

AOwlAOwlAOwl · 17/04/2021 00:38

Thought it was great. Glad Riz Ahmed has reached "stage three" in his acting career as an ethnic minority Smile

SwimBaby · 17/04/2021 12:12

I really enjoyed, the sound was so well done.

iklboo · 17/04/2021 13:02

Thank you for this! On my watch list now. I love Riz Ahmed, he's so talented & eminently watchable in everything I've seen him in.

iklboo · 18/04/2021 12:49

@felineflutter - thank you for recommending this. We watched it last night & enjoyed it so much. Really, really good.

8bitgame · 18/04/2021 19:28

I think I am alone but I really didn't like it. Brilliant acting and beautifully shot but

I didn't know enough about the characters to care and I was just left with too many questions. Like what sort of facility wants to teach HIM sign language but he can't have family or SO stay and no one suggest teaching them? Why didn't he just do a crowdfunder for the op - they seem a reasonably popular band. Why did his GF just do one so quickly? Why did the facility treat becoming deaf as some sort of higher calling rather than a medical issue that could be treated?

And then the "we have to treat fix what's wrong at the core of us not what we think is wrong" ending just totally trite.

DH loved it and called me a philistine but I just couldn't get on with it. I kept thinking "why..." Oscar worthy acting though just didn't like the plot.

iklboo · 18/04/2021 19:58

Why did the facility treat becoming deaf as some sort of higher calling rather than a medical issue that could be treated?

Some people in the deaf community think deafness shouldn't be - and doesn't need to be treated as a medical issue. I worked with two ladies who were deaf & had been friends for years. One had the cochlear implant and the other never spoke to her again.

threestars · 19/04/2021 00:26

I loved this film - so thought-provoking. I keep wanting to recommend it to everybody. I love how important sound is to the film; it really draws your attention to the sound of everything around you afterwards.

The various potential barriers to communication have also been interesting to mull over: sudden deafness, political differences, foreign languages, upbringing, fear, mental illness.

DH thought it moved too fast, but it was the sponsor who organised the place as it supported deaf addicts and so he went there before being able to understand and talk through all options available, since the pressing concern was that he would start using again. DH also didn't realise how political such a treatment could be.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 02/05/2021 15:16

plan to watch this

feliznavidad2 · 02/05/2021 15:38

Mum of a little boy who is deaf with cochlear implants here - looking forward to watching it!

PuppyMonkey · 02/05/2021 15:44

I agree with PP it was a good film, great performances but why on earth was the deaf school so strict about no friends/family visits at all, ever? I know lots had drug issues, but no contact at all seemed more like a weird cult.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/05/2021 15:50

We watched it this weekend and thought it was excellent. DH has hearing loss and was given a hearing aid some years ago but stopped using it. The film helped me to understand why - he said the party scene with the implants was similar to his experience with the hearing aid, the unfiltered noise was too much for him.

There were so many small touches that added to the film - the subtitles for the signing only kicking in once Ruben had picked up some sign language, the sound overall. I read after they filmed it all in two takes per scene which made it all the more impressive.

There were a couple of “huh” moments, like where he got money for a flight after selling everything for the op. But it didn’t detract from the story and I didn’t find the ending trite, I thought it was quite ambiguous.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/05/2021 15:51

It wasn’t just a deaf school, it was rehab. I don’t know much about rehab but presumably families aren’t able to stay over and who would visit him once Lou left?

Doyoumind · 02/05/2021 15:53

It was a community specifically for deaf addicts. They were there for rehabilitation and had to have strict rules in place. It wasn't a cult. Just communal living with rules you go along with or leave.

PuppyMonkey · 02/05/2021 15:58

Yes I understood that to an extent, but surely an occasional visit from a loved one would be ok? Confused

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/05/2021 16:01

I had the impression he didn’t really have anyone else, which is why he was clinging on to Lou and getting the van back.

InteriorDesignHell · 02/05/2021 16:29

I liked it and thought it had many fine points but it felt like a long short film, lacking in plot and detail.
What it did, it did beautifully, but the best films may have a simple plot overview and then you have to add, "but there's so much more to it". C.f. Tokyo Story for instance.
The scenes early on in the trailer are perfection though.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 04/05/2021 06:20

my dh also has a hearing aid so it was an interesting watch, ie the party aspect, and you sort of knew he would get rid of the implants in the end.

overnightangel · 16/05/2021 15:21

Just watched it today , it was ...... just OK.
Was expecting more from the reviews I’d seen.
Wouldn’t particularly recommend it

JustDanceAddict · 26/06/2021 23:00

I really liked it - an original plot unlike some films I’ve seen recently.
Riz Ahmed was fantastic in it too. I have slight hearing loss and find it hard to be in noisy atmospheres so really got why he had to leave the party.

IVFNewbie · 05/07/2021 12:42

I was underwhelmed. Good acting. Boring story

EmmaStone · 06/07/2021 21:37

I thought it was superb.
