Help with an old movie - Not much to go on!

Ok, here we go

Set at the beginning of World War 2.

All American boy joins up (possibly to be a pilot). Becomes toast of small town. Doesn’t get sent away but instead trains other young men who go away, fight and die.

I think there is a swimming pool scene where he and the female lead jump in fully clothed.

In my head it stars James Stewart, Gary Cooper or similar. Can’t find any information on IMDB.

Watched it years ago with my mum but keep recalling it.

No, definitely not It’s a Wonderful Life. Although that is potentially where I remember the swimming pool scene from.
