Help me find this B&W film!

Ok this is the longest of long shots but I am asking for help to find this film...!

When I was little, my Mum and I had a (much loved) Saturday afternoon activity of watching a film together, usually one on BBC2 (early 1990s).

I've always patchily remembered the film. The key thing I can remember is that there was a little girl and she befriended a (possibly homeless / vagrant?) mute man.

I believe the film was in black and white, and maybe from the 1940s/50s?

Does anyone know what film this might be?

Shirley Temple in Our Little Girl?

Whistle down the wind?

He wasn't mute but possibly Odd Man Out? Various children and a man on the run so it's a long shot!

Hmm will investigate - I don't think it is Whistle Down the Wind (I loved that film!) but will try and image search the others to get a feel.

Could it be "Gigot?" That is a film from 1962 starring Jackie Gleason as a mute janitor in France who is befriended by a little girl.

And @RCBadger has it! Thank you so much! As soon as I searched for the films, the film still images took me right back.

I feel very embarrassed that I mis-remembered the man being a vagrant now Blush

Thanks again Badger, you are a star Star is it a well-known film?

@Whiffenpoofs, Aww, thanks for the lovely compliment.

I don't think this is a particularly well known film. I do remember seeing it on TV when I was a little girl. It was not a hit with either critics or audiences but apparently Jackie Gleason was very proud of it.

So interesting. I've just been reading about the film on IMDb (and will try and seek out a copy or clips online). Thanks again Smile
