Can't work old VHS tapes - picture but no sound. Why?

Showing my age, but the family home has a box of old VHS tapes with classics tapes of old movies and TV shows recorded off the telly. A good many films you could get easily enough as a DVD, but it always seemed a good wheeze to get free films that you might settle down when older and not be in want of entertainment.

Of course, other TV shows are unique.

Now I do still have the old video recorder, and have found that movies I bought on Video rather than recorded off the telly do work well enough when hooked up to the flatscreen telly. Some of them have deteriorated quality so go in the bin but there is sound and vision.

But for some reason, the old VHS tapes with films and shows recorded off the telly look okay but don't do sound. Why? I've tried resetting the video recorder to Mono sound, but still no good.
Any clues as to what I can do before they all get binned?

most likely a cable connection issue.

Head cleaning required?

As an aside, even after all these years the merest mention of a VCR just makes me want to hunt down people who never rewound tapes from t'video shop.

Possibly a cable issue as MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing said.

Just a thought but I can only play TV recordings on the TV they were recorded on due to the inbuilt copy protection system.

Head might need cleaning.

What kind of cable from the video player to the tv? HDMI? There might be two sound cables with round jack plugs for the speakers on your TV.
