Star Wars fans - what order should we watch them in?

I haven’t really watched Star Wars before (saw a couple of the older films as a teenager but that’s it). DH & I are keen to watch them all during lockdown but wonder if it’s better to watch them in the order in which they were made, or in the chronological order in terms of the story.

Any fans recommend one way over the other?

Well I made the mistake of asking the fans in this house. Apparently it’s not an easy decision.

The eventual conclusion, after 20 minutes debate, was watch them in the order made. Rather you than me Grin isn’t one of them 4 hours long?

YinuCeatleAyru · 12/04/2020 22:11

in the order made, but for authenticity you should just watch and rewatch the original 3 once a year for 30 years before watching the really terrible prequels.

if you aren't dedicated enough for that, at least watch the original 3 twice through before moving on to the 3 prequels. then you never have to see the prequels again and can enjoy the excellent final 3 as many times as you like.

dreamingbohemian · 12/04/2020 22:15

Definitely the order made. The original trilogy are not only better, they will get you emotionally invested in the series so you can endure the boring parts of the prequels.

FadedRed · 12/04/2020 22:37

4,5,6 (the first ones made), then just go on IMDb website and read the plot synopsis for 1 & 2 but don’t waste your time watching the films, then watch 3 if you really want to, then 4, 5 & 6 again. Then the latest lot in the order they were made, but you’ll probably lose interest after the first two, because they are crap.

EngagedAgain · 12/04/2020 22:48

I've never been interested in them, but I'd say watch in the order they were made and see how you get on. It's amazing how many sequels never match up to first say 3, I find is when they start going off.

MadameJosephine · 12/04/2020 22:52

I’ve been waiting for DD to be old enough to be interested as I have hind memories of Star Wars marathons with her older brother and we finally got there during lockdown so we’ve binge watched them on Disney +

We did 4,5,6 first just to get her hooked then 1,2,3 then 4,5,6 again just because we could and then 7 and 8

Bridgeofpies · 12/04/2020 22:52

Ooh thanks a lot. Quite the consensus for the order they were made in! (Also that acquire a few of them are crap! Grin). Well the ones I saw years ago just merged into one so I don’t have particularly high expectations but we thought since we have time on our hands (and a Disney+ subscription) we might as well see what the fuss was about.

I had a look at a few blogs and several of them also said don’t bother with Episode 1 or 2 at all!

*fond memories.not sure what a hind memory is lol

nellythenarwhal · 12/04/2020 23:05

Agree with not watching Episode 1 and 2. Episode 4,5,6 are the ones to watch (and in that order)

KathyBriggs360 · 16/04/2020 02:00

I only like The Last Jedi, I think the rest of them are just the usual male hero tropefests that absolutely bore the stuffing out of me. I do tolerate the new films more because Rey is a super cool character and is much more likeable than Luke or the person from the first one who becomes Darth Vader, obi wan or something.

Padrinolopez · 17/04/2020 05:51

star wars is the best movie and I love all its sequels, I am one of those who think that the latest movies are not that good but I still like the story of the saga

Padrinolopez · 17/04/2020 05:52

I really like Star Wars is my favorite movie saga since, in fact whenever I am bored I look for one of the parts and I start to see them, sometimes I find it difficult to find them since the oldest can hardly be found in one good page

Burplecutter · 17/04/2020 06:00

What age should people wait for kids to reach to watch these films?

I haven't seen any of them (38 now) but people bang on about them so damn much that I thought I would watch them when DD is "old enough". And lockdown seems the perfect time for it.

Saying that tho, if she even whispers "no mummy" then that'll be the excuse I need not to watch, but if she wants to then we will watch. I just don't want to give up the many many hours it'll take to watch them if at 6 she's too young for them.

YinuCeatleAyru · 17/04/2020 07:35

I think 6 is old enough. DS watched the original 3 films age 5y4m and loved them. didn't watch the prequels till about a year later.

scorpio32 · 17/04/2020 07:43

4, 5, 6, rogue one, the mandalorian. Forget the rest

Burplecutter · 17/04/2020 07:53

Thanks Yinu.
We will try one on Saturday.

Paulmaicock · 19/04/2020 08:02

Try the machete order. Watch 4 then 5, then skip to 2 and 3. Then watch 6.

You watch 4 as it was the first to be made. Then you watch 5, get the big revelation.

You then watch the prequels to learn about the revelation. 1 can be skipped as nothing in it affects the rest of the story and it's rubbish.

Finally having seen the back story you then watch 6 for the conclusion.

Yeah, 4/5/6 are the best, 1/2 are pants. The newer ones I did enjoy.

4, 5 and 6.

The prequels are awful (although the pod race is worth a watch as whatever faults Lucas has, he can do movement). I watched 7 and found it so underwhelming I couldn't be bothered to watch 8 & 9.

Do watch Rogue One though (it's not main series per se but it ends as 4 begins) as it's truly brilliant.

The Mandalorian is also damned good.

lou967 · 13/05/2020 20:33

I would say the order they were made. So A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

Also check out Rogue One and Solo.
