Just read the book. Now planning to see the film. Hope I am not disappointed. Read the beginning of a review which said the con man became enamoured with his “victim”. Didn’t find that in the book. Hate it when they mess about with booksIhave read.

I have not read the book but saw the film on Monday. The con man does not become enamoured with his victim in the film - he just pretends to.

I enjoyed the film but thought the story was too far-fetched in the end. That, I suspect, is true to the book and may work better in the book.

Thanks for that ChocOrCheese. Going today to see it.

Saw it last night, thought it was great. Haven't read the book

Story was very far fetched but I really enjoyed it. Great entertainment. Ian McKellen was superb. He truly is a fine actor.

Saw this last night, really enjoyed it, both main characters are great.
Thought the ending was a bit daft but the premise of the film was good.

bohemia14 · 15/11/2019 09:45

@Horsemad I didn't like the ending - I thought they could have cut the last 2 scenes. Don't want to say much more in case I spoil up it for anyone who hasn't seen it.

bohemia14 · 15/11/2019 09:46

Spoil it, not spoil up it! Sorry

Horsemad · 15/11/2019 10:06

Yep, I agree @bohemia14! 🙂

HappydaysArehere · 15/11/2019 10:16

Well folks. The end was rubbish because the film makers changed it. The book was a believable and not ridiculous as shown to apparently please the masses. Also they watered down the reason she was so revengeful. The reason as shown in the book was far more horrific..Vincent was recruited but not for the reason given. The rest is filmmakers malarky. Shame. Could so easily have been really good. Hope the author was paid a lot of money as if he was half as annoyed as I was he deserved it.

Ah - perhaps I will read the book, then.

twosoups1972 · 15/11/2019 16:31

I haven’t read the book but I loved the film, yes far fetched but a great story.

@bohemia14 in the last scene, I didn’t understand the significance of Lily telling her grand-daughters to be careful in the water..?

bohemia14 · 15/11/2019 19:00

@twosoups1972 Me neither! Very bizarre.

HappydaysArehere · 16/11/2019 10:22

I think the last scene was her reflecting on her childhood and her sisters carefree existence before the war and how things can change.
