Rewatching old favourites with older children

I've really enjoyed rewatching my old favourites with my 16 year old son.

Some films we have enjoyed together.. (with various reactions like... i loved them , or he did and i thought they had aged badly...

I have tried and tried to get my teen sons to watchShawshank with me. Tonight they finally promised they would but by the time I'd made pizzas and brought them through, they;d put on Paddington 2 instead!

The one that worked really well and hasn't aged badly is Groundhog Day. Still funny, still clever. They also liked The Truman Show, Fight Club and Pleasantville.

The Great Escape is my absolute favourite film! Me and my brother used to watch it all the time when we were teens and quote from it. Hope my DDs like it as much!

Terminator 1 and 2. Or the die hard movies (just spotted someone already said that). What about lethal weapon or speed but not speed 2 coz that was shit.

The Green Mile

Not sure how we feel about American Beauty these days given The Unpleasantness but it's a terrific film.

Oooh -- Erin Brockovich

I watched Highlander with DD as she’s a Queen fan. It did NOT stand the test of time, especially the scary baddy. Sean Connery and the love story made up for it, though.
Films we have enjoyed are Kate and Leopold, all the Hugh Grant classics, Sliding Doors, About Time (?) and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Sorry, those are more Chick Flicks .
For boys what about some classic Stephen Spielberg? ET, Close Encounters, Jaws?
Or Alien, Predator if they like monsters.
The original Blade Runner is great. I loved The Abyss when it was in the cinema.

Maybe I've got weird kids - or I've bought them up weirdly (more likely) - but there are very few films which I've watched with them that have 'aged badly'. They've loved things like Busby Berkeley musicals, and adored Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot, and all sorts of black and white stuff from the 30s onward. DD1 (17) loves Hammer Horrors and we were both in tears at the end of Midnight Cowboy

The only two films I can think of that we've watched together that have aged horribly were both by Mel Brooks. Robin Hood men in Tights, and Blazing Saddles. DD 1 loves Young Frankenstein (as well as the original James Whale originals it is spoofing) my kids get his humour but Robin Hood men in Tights was just full of references to things that I can't remember so god knows what chance the kids stood, and Blazing Saddles with its endless 'rape jokes' was a real education in the way that what was once seen as cutting-edge transgresively funny is now obviously abusive shite.

Forrest Gump

The Fugitive is a great film I think, just a brilliant, edge of the seat thriller. That might be good. It seems to be permanently showing on Sony Movie channel if you have access to that.

Back to the Future, if he hasn't seen it yet

Trading Places was good and is Christmassy.
Ghostbusters was a huge disappointment.

Not that old but my 15 year old loved World's End.

My boys loved Jaws. LOVED IT.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest reduced my teens to rapt silence, they put their phones down and everything.

Both of the Bill and Ted's haven't aged (apart from the women's hair!) and my boy's liked them

I have recently watched Bridget Jones, Last of the Mohicans, Gremlins and Lost Boys with my older teens. Other favourites include Back to the Future, Mrs Doubtfire, Catch Me If You Can and Titanic

Yy to Groundhog Day and Breakfast Club. My 14 year old loved both of these.

Uncle Buck is good too. We watched with my 9 year old so family friendly. Jaws excellent.

I really want to watch The Lost Boys but I'm scared it won't stand up to my memories.
