I'd never seen this before and watched it this afternoon. Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the end. Can anyone tell me what happened?

Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) is ringing the church bells, Sister Ruth is jealous of her "relationship" with Mr Dean. They struggle, Sister Ruth falls to her death. All the nuns leave the convent in the rain.

FABULOUS FILM!

I now highly recommend The Wicked Lady for your next Powell and Pressberger film.

I didn't know it was a film! I like the book though, I love Rumer Godden, though; In This House of Brede is a fabulous book. Heart rending and thought-provoking and not like anything else I've ever read.

I've never read her, though i've heard of her. Perhaps i'll give her a go.

I love this film - it is one of my all time favourite classic films. It does make me laugh though how Dean strides about half naked - no wonder the nuns were in a tizzy.

I'm another Rumer Godden fan, though I'm not actually keen on the book of Black Narcissus.

I really like her multigenerational novels – A Fugue in Time and later, more ambitiously, China Court.

An Episode of Sparrows and The Greengage Summer are also favourites.

I love Black Narcissus - I watched it recently for the umpteenth time with my teenage (16) DD who was gripped and gasped at the lipstick shot.

One of my favourites though is A Canterbury Tale - a beautiful, odd little film which makes me cry even to think about.

And I Know Where I'm Going literally changed my life. I now live on the West Coast of Scotland because of that film.

I wouldn't recommend The Wicked Lady as anyone's next Powell and Pressburger as it wasn't written directed or produced by either of them.

Rumer Godden also wrote The Diddakoi which is a fab book
