Hi
Teen DS found it useful watching a couple of films in French with French subtitles. These were a gift. I’ve had a look on Netflix and Amazon but I can’t see anything obvious...do you have any suggestions? Thank you

Maybe Amelie?

When I was a teenager I adored Danton (1983 film). Gerard Depardieu back when he was still really gorgeous, but it was the actor playing Camille Desmoulins who absolutely had my heart. It's huge and romantic, great for teenagers, plus we were all reading Hilary Mantel's A Place of Greater Safety then.

Good idea...I could check Netflix for Gerard Depardieu films there must be plenty (and a nice bonus for me to have to watch him!)
Thanks!

He's great in Cyrano - also suggest A Bag of Marbles, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. I love Amelie but there is a bit of sex in it (and the male lead works in a sex shop) so depending on how embarrassing your DD finds that sort of film (mine finds it excruciating) you may want to avoid (or at least not watch with her).

Ma vie en rose - the 1996 one about a little boy. Saw it at A level with drench teacher and loved it.

La Haine is gripping but gritty / quite adult.

*french teacher obvs

Also, the intouchables is incredible. One of my favourite films.

Bostin · 04/01/2019 23:15

Tell No One. But it might be an 18

Bostin · 04/01/2019 23:16

It’s a 15. Good thriller

EL2019 · 04/01/2019 23:20

“Au revoir les enfants” is PG. Seem to remember it’s quite sad though, about hiding 3 Jewish boys at a school during WWII

Dogmatix34 · 04/01/2019 23:25

La famille Belier is amazing. About a deaf family with a hearing daughter who has a talent for singing. It’s really funny as well.

Politicalacuityisathing · 04/01/2019 23:27

Depends on how teenage. I was a teen in the 90s and loved a bit of French cinema: absolute favourite was la femme Nikita and la haine (amazing soundtrack) and also fondly remember manon de source and Jean de florette , 3 colours trilogy. But I was probably late teenager for all those.

My favourite is Priceless, starring Audrey tatou. Think the subject matter would be engaging for a teen and some really funny bits too. Also loved Delicatessen and Amelie.

LoniceraJaponica · 04/01/2019 23:34

La Gloire de Mon Pere and Le Chateau de ma Mere are both beautiful films about Marcel Pagnol's childhood. I have the books as well.
(I can't do the accents on my laptop BTW)

Fozzleyplum · 04/01/2019 23:35

My teen DS likes Les Visiteurs.

Fozzleyplum · 04/01/2019 23:36

Also, I've just ordered Diva for him.

CelticPromise · 04/01/2019 23:37

I watched La Haine a few times as a teen, it's brilliant.

Fozzleyplum · 04/01/2019 23:41

Sorry for multiple posts - Am trying to remember which films DS likes. Au Revoir Les Enfants would be good -DS is currently doing it for A Level, and I'd also second the suggestion of Amelie and Delicatessen. We've also watched Back to Burgundy (Ce Qui Nous Lie) which came out last year.

Tonsilss · 04/01/2019 23:44

The first day of the rest of your life.
Le petit Nicolas is nice for all ages.
I recommend watching TV series though.

Tonsilss · 04/01/2019 23:46

Look at Amazon.fr while you still can pre-Brexit.

gallicgirl · 04/01/2019 23:48

Priceless would be good and anything directed by Jeunet.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/01/2019 23:51

The chorus
Une vie du chat
La Famille Bélier (Older teens - quite a bit of sex)

user49er · 05/01/2019 01:02

Tell no one is a fabulous film..

bionicnemonic · 05/01/2019 08:19

Wow! I’ve been away for a couple of days and came back to all these wonderful suggestions! Thank you all SO much! I’m really pleased! Lots to enjoy...and we don’t do as much together as we used to so double win! Thank you

No sure how old he is but l’auberge espagnol is great.
Can’t remember how suitable it is for a teen so maybe watch first and see!
