Anyone looking forward to this? The trailer looks really good.

It was a mess. I'm the biggest wuss going and was just bored by the end; three promising ideas shoe-horned together. Great performances though, the little girl was quite uncanny.

Just got back. I enjoyed it, but also laughed at the 'scary' bits.

MargoChanning · 22/06/2018 21:26

Just got back from seeing this. Good first hour or so. Tense, creepy and great performance from Toni Collette. Then descends into batshit bollocks in last twenty minutes. Audience was chuckling, which is never a good sign at a horror film. It does have some good scary moments but as others have said, it doesn't live up to the hype.

Just seen this film tonight.....I'm not sure what the scary bits were to be honest...first half was ok, thought it was just building the tension but the other half was just utter shite

Saw this last night and was bored. It just wasn’t good. Wanted to leave as was so bored but DP wanted to stay, at least it got funnier towards the end, I genuinely asked if it was meant to be a comedy when it finished.

The thing with magical realism (eg in a world where summoning devil spirits is real) is that you have to be able to believe that the rest of it would really happen too. Would you continually forget an epipen when you had a child deathly allergic to nuts? Would you force your 13 year old (autistic?) daughter to go to a random party your older teen son was going to, where you believed it was likely drinking was happening? Having done so, would you not notice she hadn’t come home that night until you popped out to the shops the next morning? Would you watch your bereaved wife with a strong family history of mental illness visibly deteriorating and becoming apparently delusional and not intervene for her? Would a child who had had an apparent seizure at school and fractured their nose, be sent home comatose so that their parents were literally manhandling their unconscious body from the car into the house?

Seriously. The ‘normal’ bits have to be believable or there’s no way an audience is going to accept the spirits and spontaneous human combustion and cheesewiring your own head off and random
naked cult members lurking in your garden and levitating corpses. Come on.

I love horror films. This wasn’t a horror film, it was just bad. I have no comprehension why critics gave it such good reviews.

Frosty66612 · 01/07/2018 17:15

I LOVE horror films and I didn’t find this one scary at all (I’m not easily scared though). It was a reasonably entertaining film to watch with a couple of minor jumpy moments, but that was as far as it went for me. The ending was so silly and the whole audience was laughing out loud at parts of it

Yes I know- why wasn't someone on the set shouting from the rooftops that (a) she would never leave the house without a constant supply of epipens and (b) no one would make a teenage boy take his sister to that party. How did that ever get past ?

I couldn't believe for one minute that the son would just be taken home after the school incident- still covered in blood with little more than a sticking plaster.

LassWiADelicateAir · 07/07/2018 10:08

The Witch was far, far better. I thought it was very scary. I liked the idea that what was happening could have been caused by ergot poisoning or could have been supernatural and even at the end it could still have been the young girl's delusion caused by ergotism which we were seeing.

PigEyedHorseFrightener · 07/07/2018 10:11

Serendipity - THANK YOU! You’ve articulated what I couldn’t put my finger on; why I found the film so difficult to buy into.

I’ve watched worse films and still been able to resist laughing. As you say, if you can never find that connection - that hole in reality we willingly drop through when we suspend disbelief - because the trivial stuff is so ridiculous, then it just never works.

LassWiADelicateAir · 07/07/2018 10:30

Yes Serendipity's post is excellent.

I saw this today and after all the reviews it got I was expecting to come out traumatised.
No, it just didn't work for me at all.
I was worried about the scene with the piano wire but when it actually happened all I could think about was " how the bloody hell did she get there when she was last seen banging her head on the loft hatch?"
It didn't make sense and there was almost no tension.
Very disappointing .

Some very enjoyable scary moments, but the last 15 minutes was utter bollocks.

One thing that got up my nose was the mum legging it to Aunt Lydia's gaff to find what the hell was going on, and why wearing all that off-white gear, so unlike anything she's worn before? So she would show up for the camera in the shadows when hanging off the ceiling of her son's room later on.

ProperLavs · 11/07/2018 16:18

It was her hanging off the ceiling? I couldn’t work it out. Better go back to Specsavers.
