Which one was the teenage daughter not allowed in and why was that?

I really liked it but it left me with lots of questions...

Why didn’t they spend their time soundproofing like crazy, egg cartons, duvets, whatever they could find in order to make a ‘safe’ room for the baby and the mother during birth?

Obviously, why get pregnant!

Why, in a world of sound monsters, do you leave your small child trailing miles behind you while walking?

Why didn’t they give him the toy minus the batteries?

The fireworks distracted the one monster, but a single gunshot brought loads of them running?

And the fires, I presumed they were other survivors living silently... so that night for some reason they had suddenly all died??

I did like it though. Emily Blunt is so beautiful!

Totally agree with you about the sound proofing for labour. They'd thought about the baby, mattress over the basement hatch, soundproof crib with oxygen etc.

In fairness the mother did blame herself terribly for not carrying the youngest child. Maybe she'd got used to the father carrying him, but on this occasion he was carrying the middle one instead. They were probably both distracted by worrying about the middle child being ill with no hospital to take him to. You know how when you're worried about one child you can sort of lose focus on the others?

I think that the father didn't give the littlest child the rocket without the batteries because it was a hard toy that would make a noise if dropped. His older sister did give him the toy without batteries but he picked them up before leaving the supermarket.

Which part did everyone find the most uncomfortable to watch? The baby in the box with oxygen mask really had me on edge, along with the Labour scene beforehand.

I liked that the film didn't have a massive lead up or back story.

Wasn't 100% sure about the ending, but what else could they have done? Happily ever after with the army descending to rescue them..

I think an ending like The Mist would’ve been better... or just watching the monsters approach on the screens rather than pumping the shot gun. That was the worst bit I thought...

Emily Blunt was outstanding, really made it for me. I thought it was really original and interesting!

She wasn't allowed in the one in the house where he was working on her hearing aids. No idea why though

This could be totally wrong, but I assumed it was because she can't hear when something's making a noise, so can't be trusted around the radios incase she accidentally turns one on and doesn't realise. That's the only reason I could think of.

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/04/2018 07:56

With the basement thing, the only other thing I thought was that he didn't want her to destroy all his work on the hearing aids? As she didn't want him to keep trying.

It was interesting how the teenage girl's deafness was both an advantage and a disability.

It was an advantage in the all the family could sign and therefore had a safe way of communicating. And of course her deafness was the key to realising the creature's Achilles heel.

But her deafness would also mean that she might be less aware of inadvertent noises she might make and also she couldn't hear the clicking noise that the monsters make.

I guess that the clicking noise is a kind of echo location, like bats use, that enable the creatures to move about and "see" their environment.

A bit disappointing. Why let a very young child wander around a shop on his own, and be tail end Charlie when walking back to their house. How did they manage to generate the electricity they must have required - all batteries, as a generator would be noisy? There was other stuff that annoyed me but they'd probably be spoilers.
