About 5/6 years ago watched a film set in 30/40shillywood when the song still said hollywoodland (it's not the film by the same name though).

It's a murder deceive film. Some actresses get killed the dective seems to live a motel type place.

The film director is making horror pics and his wife is mad and kills herself by throwing herself down the stairs. The directors daughter is seei the dective.
Any clues on what it can be?

Not sure as I watched it a very long time ago and cant quite remember the plot...but is it L.A Confidential?

Maybe The Black Dahlia. I haven't seen it in years but from what I remember it could fit your description.

Thanks handsfull it's similar to black dahlia but it's it. We've got that on DVD.

I don't know why the whole hollywoodland sign bit really stuck with me
